Fire Departments
1The first fire brigades were organized many centuries before Christ. In 24 b.c. the Romans used slaves for fire fighters and police work. The Romans also defuse the first means of throwing a continuous stream of water Roman figheters used axes, blankets, buckets, ladders, and poles.
2Hundreds of years later, fire engines were equipped with pump operated by hand. These did not have much force and the streams of water could not be thrown very far. Many colonial villages in the United States set up bucket brigroks when a fire broke out. Every man ran into the street with his bucket and two lines were formed to the nearest water. Bucket full of water were passed along one line and thrown on the fire .The empty buckets were passed down the other line to be filled. There was a great down of fire in the colonial settlements. Houses were made of wood and had thatched roofs. They broke down quickly.
3In the middle 1800's steam fire engines were first used. The steam boiler and pump were on a wagon pulled by fire or horses. In 1910 motor-driven fire enginer came into use. By 1928 practically all horse-drawn enginer had disappeared.
4 The problem of fighting fire has led to the growth of fire departments In the United States there are about 23,500 fire departments. Some of these have paid money. In smaller cities and towns the members are volunteers who serve without pay. About one out of ten of the 1,000,000 fire fighters in the United States is a paid fireman working fire tools.

These swept cities like violent windstorms, killing tens of thousands of people. in some cases, destruction off life and property by fire was greater than that caused by atomic bombs. Often other bombs were dropped in the same time to destroy water mains and cut of the water supply. This made the work of the fire fighters more difficult.
