2. Emphasis

When we want to emphasize a particular part of a sentence in spoken or written English we can use the following emphatic constructions:

1. It is/was … who/which/that… .

It was Mark who broke the window yesterday.

2. That is/was + question word… .

That is what I want.

That was how she became popular.

3. Question word + is/was it + that … ?

When is it that you are going to leave?

Who was it that gave you this watch?

4. Question word + subject + verb + is/was… .

What I want is an apology.

Where he lives is not your business.

What Sarah does is (to) design clothes.

5. All (that) + subject + verb + is/was… .

All Jane cares about is money.

6. Question word + ever… ?

Whoever told you this?

Wherever did you see her?

7. Do/does/did + bare infinitive (in Present Simple, Past Simple and Imperative)

I do believe you.
