Tom Whitewashes the Fence.

Characters: Aunt Polly

Tom Sawyer

Ben Rogers

Jim Hollies

(Tom appears with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He begins whitewashing the fence. Then Jim comes out of the gate, singing a song. He has a bucket in his hand).

Tom: Say, Jim, I’ll fetch the water if you’ll whitewash a little.

Jim: I can’t, Master Tom. Old missis told me to go and get the water and not to stop with anybody. She said: “If Tom asks you to whitewash, go along and mind your own business”.

Tom: Oh, never mind what she said, Jim. That’s the way she always talks. Put the bucket here. I’ll be in a minute. She won’t ever know.

Jim: Oh, don’t, Master Tom. Don’t pull the bucket. Please don’t, Tom. (Tom pulls the bucket and Jim pulls it back).

Tom: Jim, I’ll give you a white marble. (Jim hesitates) White marble, Jim.

Jim: That’s a wonderful marble. But, Master Tom, I am awfully afraid of the old missis ... (Jim puts down his bucket and takes the brush to whitewash. In another moment Aunt Polly enters, a slipper in her hand and triumph in her eyes).

Aunt Polly: Well, what are you doing here, Jim? (Strikes him with the slipper, Jim takes his bucket and runs away. Tom begins to whitewash. Aunt Polly goes away smiling. Enters Ben Rogers eating an apple. Tom pays no attention to Ben).

Ben: Hello, old chap.

Tom: Why, it’s you, Ben, wasn’t noticing you.

Ben: Say, I’m going for a swim. Don’t you wish? But of course, you’d rather work, wouldn’t you? (Tom looks at the boy).

Tom: What do you call work?

Ben: Why, isn’t that work? (Tom resumes his whitewashing).

Tom: Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know, it suits Tom Sawyer.

Ben: Oh, now you don’t mean to say that you like it?

Tom (continuing to whitewash): Like it? Well, I don’t see why I – shouldn’t like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day? (Ben stops eating his apple, watches Tom’s every move and gets more and more interested).

Ben: Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.

Tom: Oh, no. I think it won’t do, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly is awfully particular about this fence. It must be done very carefully. I think there is only one boy that can do it.

Ben: Is that so? Oh, let me try a little. I’d let you, if I were you, Tom.

Tom: Ben, I’d like to, but Aunt Polly... Well, Jim wanted to do it, but she wouldn’t let him.

Ben: Oh, Tom, let me try. I’ll be careful. I’ll give you my apple. (Tom gives up the brush and takes the apple. Ben begins to whitewash).
