  • Have you ever noticed when you were making a face? What was people’s reaction to it like?

  • Do you consider it to be of any use to let your imagination run free? Why? What sort of people succumb to it?

  • Is it easy for you to recover your composer after a burst of emotions?

4. Complete the sentences using the active vocabulary under study:

  • Sam has written the paper in record time as while writing he always …

6. Say who made these utterances and under what circumstances:

  • “I never thought those guys had a sense of humor” (p. 2)

  • “Back to reality” (p. 4)

7. Questions and topics for discussion:

  1. The first meeting of the society. Where did it take place? Why was it Neil who conducted it? Quote the traditional opening message. Can you call it the motto of the society? Give your arguments. Describe the procedure of the meeting. Do you think it had much in common with the one held in Mr. Keating’s days? Why didn’t he join the boys?

  2. Analyze the poems read out in the cave. Consider their content and ideas. Did they provoke reflections and stir up emotions? What sort of?

    1. Mr. Keating’s lessons.

  • It’s a well-known fact that every lesson must have a clear-cut aim (to get information, to acquire some habits, to master certain skills, etc.) What was the lesson depicted in chapter 7 aimed at? Define the role of the teacher and students at the lesson. Were the students provided with a sort of challenge? If yes, which one: spiritual or intellectual? Find evidence in the text that the boys started undergoing great changes.

  • Speak about Mr. Keating’s treatment of poetry. Did he succeed in making the students’ imagination (Todd’s in particular) work? What helped him achieve it?

  • A game of soccer. Why were demerits abolished? What was so astonishing about the game?
