My hero is a sports person. He’s American and he’s from Texas. He was born in 1971. In 1996, he was very ill and doctors said that he had cancer. But he got better and he won the Tour de France seven times. Now that he has stopped cycling he has a charity which helps people with cancer. I think he’s very kind and very brave.
My hero is a politician. He’s South African and he was born in 1918. He was the first black president of South Africa – he was president from 1994 to 1999. But before that he fought for the rights of black Africans in South Africa and he spent 27 years in prison. He’s a very brave and honest man, and he’s a hero for millions of people around the world.
My hero is a political leader. He was born in India in 1869 and he died in 1948. At that time, India was ruled by the British. For more than 30 years he worked hard to get the British to leave India. I think he is one of the most important people in history. He was very intelligent and brave.

Jack This is a good photo. Where did you take it?
Suzie I didn’t take it. My friend Molly took it at the Live 8 concert in London.
Jack Live 8?
Suzie It was a charity concert for Africa. I didn’t go, but I watched it on TV. It was amazing. Did you see it?
Jack No, I didn’t. Did a lot of bands play?
Suzie Yes, they did: Coldplay, Stereophonics, Keane … Bill Gates was there too.
Jack Really? Can he sing? I didn’t know that.
Suzie He didn’t sing! He made a speech about Africa.

Naomi Hi, Jack. How was your weekend?
Jack It was terrible – really bad!
Naomi Oh dear. Why was it so bad?
Jack Everything I did went wrong. On Saturday morning, I went shopping to buy a present for my dad. I bought a DVD for him, but when I got home, I didn’t have it.
Naomi Oh no! How did you lose it?
Jack I’m not sure. I think I left it on the bus.
Naomi Oh well …
Jack Then on Saturday night, I met some friends in town and we had dinner at a café.
Naomi That sounds good.
Jack It wasn’t. The food was terrible. I couldn’t eat it.
Naomi That’s a shame. What about Sunday?
Jack On Sunday, I wrote a really long email to my friend in Canada. But there was a problem with the computer and I lost the email before I sent it!
Naomi Poor you! You had a really bad weekend.
Jack And that’s not all. On Sunday evening, I rented a DVD – Troy with Brad Pitt. But when I started to watch it, it was a different film. The wrong DVD was in the box.
Naomi What a disaster! So what did you watch?
Jack It was a Hungarian film about workers’ rights.
Naomi Was it good?
Jack I don’t know. I fell asleep. Anyway, how was your weekend?
Naomi Oh, it was OK.
Jack Good.
