My University

The Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute (now called the Russian State Geological Prospecting University) grew out of the Moscow Mining Academy established in 1918 and transformed into 6 independent institutes in 1930, the Geological Prospecting Institute being one of them. Much credit for the establishment and development of the Institute as an educational and research institution is due to the prominent scientists V.A. Obruchev, I.M. Gubkin, A.E Fersman, V.I. Vernadsky, A.P. Karpinsky and many others who laid the foundation of the Russian school of geology and mining.

Today it is a leading educational and research center training highly-qualified specialists in the field of geology and mining.

The University has on its staff lecturers, among them Doctors of Science, Candidates of Science, Corresponding Members of the Academy of Sciences.

The University provides education for full-time, part-time students and those studying by correspondence. More than 5000 undergraduate and postgraduate students study at the faculties of applied geology, economics, hydrogeology, geophysics , ecology, exploration and mining technologies ( exploration and mining engineering).

The five – year course of study includes fundamental, general professional and specialized training which ends with the defence of a graduation paper or project.

On completion of the University course students receive a diploma.

The study system is based on lectures, seminars, classroom and laboratory work. Students also have periods of professional practical training in the field, at mines and industrial enterprises where they gain working experience and get to know the stages of production.

The students’ progress is assessed by regular tests, course papers and end-of-term examinations.

The scientific research department is responsible for the research work conducted at the University with broad participation of the undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The University has well-equipped laboratories, classrooms and lecture-halls fitted out with computers and audiovisual devices. There is a good library with books and journals in Russia and foreign languages.

The University geological and mineralogical museums possess large collections of rocks and minerals.

Sport is part of students’ life. Sport competitions between students’ teams are very popular. There is a good gym and outdoor sport grounds where students go in for sports and play team games.

Since its foundation the University has trained more than 25 000 highly-qualified specialists. Some of the graduates have become outstanding scientists, leading specialists and state prize winners known for the important deposits discoveries.

The University has been awarded several Orders for its great contribution to the training of highly-qualified specialists for the country.

My Faculty

I study at the mining department which trains specialists in mining engineering. The course of study lasts 5 years and consists of fundamental, general professional and specialized training. During the first two years students study mathematics, chemistry, physics, drawing and foreign languages. The final years are devoted to specialized subjects and work at a graduation paper or project.

Students’ progress is assessed by regular tests, course papers and end-of-term examinations. Undergraduates usually take 4 or 5 exams.

The study system is based on lectures, seminars, class and laboratory works.

Students also have periods of professional practical training in the field, at mines and industrial enterprises where they gain working experience and familiarize themselves with the stages of production and every job from worker to engineer.

On completion of the University course and passing all the examinations students defend a graduation paper or project and receive a diploma. Undergraduate students work at graduation papers under the supervision of their scientific advisers who they can consult about the subject of their diploma work.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students usually combine their study with research carried out at the laboratories fitted out with up-to-date equipment.

The University has a postgraduate school and graduates can continue their education as postgraduate students. On completion of the postgraduate course and defending a thesis they are conferred the Degree of Master of Science (Candidate of Science).
