Mining education in Russia

In pre-revolutionary Russia there were several higher mining schools training mining engineers.

After the revolution in 1918 the Moscow Mining Academy was established. But the number of specialists who graduated from those institutions was not enough to meet the demand for geologists and mining engineers needed by the growing mining industry. To cope with the task in 1930 the Mining Academy was transformed into some independent institutes. The Mining Institute, the Oil Institute and the Institute of Geological Prospecting were among them.

Russian mining higher education establishments provide full-time, part-time and postgraduate education and develop a wide range of programmes necessary to train highly-qualified specialists. They offer courses in mining technology, machinery and transport, hydraulic engineering, electrical engineering, automation, surveying, geodesy, information technology as well as courses in environment protection, economics and management, marketing studies, computer-aided design and others.

Laboratory work is an important part in training specialist. During periods of field work and practical training at mines and industrial enterprises students gain working experience and practical knowledge. They take part in research projects conducted by their departments as members of students’ scientific groups.

Students graduate from mining and geological institutes as mining engineers, mining mechanical engineers, mining electrical engineers, geologists, economists and managers in the field of mining industry and geology.
