Грамматический обзор 3 Read grammar guide 3 for practicing and developing study skills to cope with difficulties of reading English grammar textbooks.
There are many instances of the Present Progressive (Continuous) Tense forms in TEXT B:
e.g. I am wearing Nike tennis shoes.
e.g. American companies are spreading their goods to the four
corners of the earth.
Present Progressive (Continuous): Use the following rule to form the Present Progressive:
subject
+ am/ is/ are + Ving
...
We often use the Present Progressive in English. It is very different from the Simple Present Tense, both in structure and in use. In general, the Present Progressive Tense is used to express the idea that something is in progress at the current moment.
1) We use the Present Progressive when we talk about something which is happening at the time of speaking (now, at the moment) or which is happening at present, but not necessarily at the moment of speaking (this week, this year, this semester, etc):
e.g. What are you doing now? – I am typing a letter now.
e.g. I’m living with my parents at the moment, but soon I’ll buy my
own house.
e.g. He is studying English and French this semester.
2) It is often used to express current trends and general tendencies:
e.g. On-line shopping is growing rapidly nowadays.
e.g. Economic conditions are changing all the time.
3) We use the Present Progressive to express a planned action in the near future:
e.g. Jane is leaving for Moscow tomorrow. Is she packing her case
now?
e.g. We are flying to Britain next week.
4) We often use the Present Progressive in conversations when we talk about repeated actions that are irritating to the speaker or a situation that keeps annoying you:
e.g. You are constantly/always smoking in my presence! Stop doing
this immediately!
