5. Nature
Gm food
Europe and America produce more food than their population actually need. At the same time there are countries in the world which can’t satisfy the needs of their peoples. In some places the climatic conditions don’t allow people to grow enough food so scientists have come with a seemingly brilliant solution – GM food. The plants or the cattle are genetically modified in such a clever way that food grows faster, looks more beautiful and attractive and practically doesn’t get spoilt. But for every plus there’s always or minus. We don’t know yet if such food is safe for human health and that it will not bring any further changes into our DNA which may end in a disastrous way for the mankind. Nowadays while buying food you can see if it’s genetically modified or not. The latter is more expensive but seems a safer option. The choice is certainly up to you.
6. Education
Schools around the world
You attend a regular school every working day. You may take a bus to school or simply walk to it or probably your parents give you a lift. So you walk into a school building without realizing in fact how privileged you are to be able to reach your school without any problems. Millions of kids around the world walk miles and miles to see their teacher and sometimes their route is dangerous – crossing wild waters or walking through jungles. So many kids in, say, Australia, can’t attend a regular school as farms in Australia may be very isolated from one another so they have lessons on the radio according to a special schedule. Lots of kids can’t read or write or count as there’s no one to teach them. So next time you walk into the school building, be grateful for being able to do so.
7. Work
Jobs of the future
You are now choosing your future career and are considering what jobs are high in demand in the modern world. But actually you will start working full time in several years only so why not think about what jobs will be necessary then? In our world, which is rapidly changing, several years means a long time really. There will be more IT specialists in all spheres, especially in medicine. There will be genetic engineering affordable for all people. More and more things are done online nowadays so there will be people who regulate our life in the Internet like Internet lawyers, for instance. There will probably be eco psychologists – psychologists for animals and plants. More and more professions will be inevitably connected with exploring the outer space as well. So before making your final decision, try to look into the future of our planet and you will probably choose a job which will be popular in ten years’ time.
8. Health
Medical check-ups
Public healthcare in most developed countries asks people to have regular medical check-ups – at least once in three years, the more often the better. Such check-ups will include routine blood tests and examinations of some specialists. However, lots of people find the idea of spending a couple of days in a polyclinic not very inviting. At the same time, regular medical check-ups may save your health and life. Often people just ignore minor symptoms like coughs or headaches just because their life is too hectic to pay attention to such trivialities. Doctors will find out what’s going on and if there’s a problem, they’ll help to sort it out. Moreover, there are some illness which don’t show in any symptoms on early stages but tests can show something is wrong and doctors will give you all the necessary treatment. So squeeze some time in your schedule to have a medical check-up.
9. Sport
Is modern sport too commercialized?
Sport has always been popular with people all over the world. Lots of people, both young and old, do different kinds of sport – winter or summer sports, competitive or non-competitive sports, team or individual sports. Still, even more people enjoy watching sports on TV. If you think about it, you will definitely see how much money is invested into sports advertising now, how expensive the tickets to sports competitions are, how high sportsmen’s fees are. Is it fair to waste so much money into just showing sport to people? On the other hand, winning doesn’t matter so much for sportsmen now it’s getting the money prize that’s much more important than fame or medals. It makes sportsmen use drugs or do other unfair things. The very essence of sport is lost in such a way.
