Unit 3. Jobs

Text 1. Choosing an Occupation

One of the most difficult problems a young person faces is what to do about a career. There are people who know what they are going to do when they are 5 or 6. But the majority of us do not make a decision until something makes us face the challenge.

Choosing an occupation takes time and there are a lot of things you have to think about. You may find that you will have to take special courses to qualify forma particular job or that you need some actual work experience. Fortunately, there are people who can give you advice. At schools there are teachers who are professionally qualified to counsel you and to give detailed information. You can talk over your ideas with your family and friends. But the final decision is still yours.

Comprehension and discussion

What is the most difficult problem for a young person?

Why do many of young people not know what profession to choose?

What things should we remember when choosing an occupation?

How did you choose your future profession?

Text 2. Why People Work

Have you ever asked yourself what you are working for? The answer, pronounced with a smile can be “It’s the money of course”. Or somebody can mention job satisfaction or the sense of achievement behind the clinching of an important deal. May be it’s the company of other people? But what about farmers then? Is it a conversation in the farmyard that keeps them captivated by their job? “Work is power and a sense of status”, say those who have attained their goals or feel distressed that nobody recognizes their leadership qualities.

I say this under my breath, that most of us work hoping for something to turn up. “We’ll win the lottery, and tell the boss what we really think. We’ll scrape together the money and go around the world, or spend more time in the garden. One day we ‘ll get the promotion we deserve, but until then we have something to do. And we are so busy doing it that we don’t have time to wonder why.

Why are you going to work? How far do you agree with the ideas expressed in the text? Is job satisfaction really important or is it just people`s fancy?
