  1. Agree or disagree with the statements:

  • Electronics is the basis of modern automation;

  • The development of electronics is particularly rapid always.

  • O.G.Stoletov first formulated the law of electron emission by a heated body (1839- 1896).

  • The discovery of the vacuum device (the electron valve) was prepared by O.M.Popov;

  • The discovery of radio made by O.S.Popov also gave a powerful stimulus to the development of electronics.

  1. Ask given sentences as many questions as possible:

The first two-electrode valves were made in 1904 soon after this discovery. The development of electronics is particularly rapid now.

Unit 7.

AUTOMATION

  1. Memorize the following words and expressions:

Prominent - визначний

Stage – стадія, ступінь

Artificial - штучний

Device - прилад

Cybernetics - кібернетика

Release – звільнювати, виділяти

Vast - величезний

Amount – кількість, величина

Inefficient – нездатний, невмілий

Small scale - маловажний

Branch – галузь

  1. Read the text, study it. Automation

We live in the age of very interesting achievements of science and engineering. This is the age of space researches, the age of atomic energy the age when electronics and automation occupy the most prominent place.

Automation reached the highest stage in the development of technology.

Modern man comes less and less in contact with nature. He lives more and more in an artificial world of his own making the world of technological devices that greatly increases the productivity of his labour.

Application of automation and cybernetics to production increases greatly the labour productivity, makes it possible to release vast amounts of labour power from inefficient small scale production branches. Automation not only makes labour productivity but radically changes its nature.

  1. Answer the questions:

  1. Characterize the age we live in.

  2. What stage did the automation reach in the development of technology?

  3. What greatly increases the productivity of labour?

  4. Does application of automation to production increase greatly the labour productivity?

  5. What does automation radically change?

  1. Translate into English using the text:

  • Досягнення науки

  • Вік космічних досліджень

  • Автоматика охоплює

  • Визначне місце

  • Розвиток технологій

  • Штучний світ

  • Технологічні прилади

  • Збільшення продуктивності

  • Застосування автоматики

  • Радикально змінює

  1. Say if the statements are true or false:

1.We live in the age of very interesting achievements of science and engineering.

2.Automation reached the lowest stage in the development of technology.

3.Modern man comes less and less in contact with computers.

4.Application of automation and cybernetics to production increases greatly the labour productivity.

5.Automation not only makes labour productivity but radically changes its nature.

  1. Make up the dialogue using the words:

Release, cybernetics, labour, productivity, vast, branch, amount, device, stage, small scale, modern man, application, science.
