Unit 10.

MORE ABOUT ELECTRONICS.

1. Read and translate the text:

The big problem in understanding digital computers is the logic which ties the logical elements into a unit performing arithmetic and logical operations. Fortunately, all computer operations can be grouped into five functional categories.

The method in which these five functional categories are related to one another represents the functional organization of a digital computer. By studying the functional organization, a broad view of the computer is obtained, it aiding materially in the study of the detailed logic.

The five major functional units of a digital computer are:

  1. INPUT - To insert outside information info the machine.

  2. MEMORY - To store information and make it available at the appropriate time.

  3. ARITHMETIC - To perform the calculations.

  4. OUTPUT - To remove information from the machine to the outside.

  5. CONROL - To cause all parts of the computer to act as a team. A complete set of instructions plus data is usually fed through the input equipment to the memory where it is stored. Each instruction is then fed to the control unit. The control unit interprets the instructions and issues commands to the other functional units to cause operations to be performed on the data. Arithmetic operations are performed in the arithmetic unit, and the results are then fed back to the memory. Information may be fed from either the arithmetic unit or the memory through the output equipment to the outside world.

2. Choose the right variant:

1. All computer operations can be grouped into_____ functional categories.

a) two b) four c) six d) five

2. INPUT —_________outside Information into the machine.

a) to insert b) to store c) to divide d) to count

3. __________ to perform the calculations

a) CONTROL b) OUTPUT c) MEMORY d) ARITHMETICS

4. Each instruction is then fed to the control________

a) number b) set c) unit d) data

5. Arithmetic operations are performed in the arithmetic unit, and are then fed back to the_______

a ) memory b) information c) system d) machine

3. Decide if these sentences are true (t) or false (f):

1.

All computer operations can be grouped into five functional categories.

2.

MEMORY — To pick up information and make it available at the appropriate time

3.
