Bonds

All bonds are loans. The investor loans money to a corporation or government entity for a certain period of time. In return, the investor receives a fixed rate of interest on the loan. The interest is usually paid at specified intervals, such as semi-annually or quarterly. When the bond matures, the investor receives the entire amount invested, or the principal. If the bound is cashed in before it matures, a penalty may be assessed. Once issued, bonds can be traded like any other security.

Treasury Bonds are considered the safest bond investment. They are not insured, but are backed by the full faith and credit of government. In other words, the government guarantees that the investor will receive full principal upon maturity. In addition, the interest earned is not subject to state and local taxes. Government bonds come in several forms and can be purchased from banks, some brokerage houses, or directly through the government.
