Text b a Contamination Control Station
A Contamination Control Station (CCS) is used to provide response activities to nuclear accidents. The CCS is placed in the transition area between the contaminated zone and the clean zone. The CCS is designed to control contamination, eliminate or reduce to an acceptable level the contamination of personnel and equipment operating in the controlled area. The CCS is also used to reduce the spread of contamination of surrounding areas.
The CCS is mounted on the base of a response vehicle. The CCS response vehicle is designed for a rapid deployment of the equipment for the set--up of the CCS. The CCS response vehicle always remains in a standby mode, fully loaded and ready to respond to accidents involving radiological contamination. It is air transportable and can deliver special equipment to anywhere on the globe at any time.
The CCS response vehicle can carry the following equipment: six radiation monitors, two high volume air samples, two portable gas generators, two portable awnings for the CCS protection from sun and weather, fifty complete sets of anti-contamination suits, fifty pocket dosimeters. Besides, it carries twelve folding tables and chairs.
The CCS response vehicle being air transportable, its design specifications and gross weight are determined by cargo capacity of the aircraft. The overall dimensions are 280”L x 102”H x 94”W, i.e. the length of the vehicle is 280 inches, its height is 102 inches, the width is 94 inches.
The body of the vehicle is of bolted and welded construction. All parts and attachments of the body are fastened in a manner to preclude loosening bolts or screws, and cracking welded joints. The areas where steel is in contact with steel are coated with modified synthetic rubber to provide water and corrosion resistance.
The CCS response vehicle has provision for supplying its own electrical power, as standard alternating current vary from country to country. Two telescoping quartz lights are installed on the rear of the vehicle. They are used for conducting night operations.
