Solas – Safety of life at sea

SOLAS it is an international convention for safe practice. The duties of every seamen according to SOLAS are following:

  • I must have a life-jacket in my cabin

  • I must not appear on the open deck during the stormy weather.

  • I must wear my working uniform, including: an overall, firm trousers, protective shoes, ear-flaps, gloves, mittens, goggles, and so on.

  • By carrying out special works I must have: a safety belt, a securing line, a helmet and other personal means of protection.

Special works are dangerous works, for example: at the height more than 3 metres, works overboard, welding works. It is prohibited to smoke in dangerous areas: in the engine-room and in the paint room.

According to STCW before being assigned to shipboard duties all persons employed on seagoing ships other than passengers shall receive approved familiarization training in personal survival techniques or receive sufficient information and to be able to:

  1. Communicate with other persons on board on elementary safety matters and understand safety information symbols, signs and alarm signals.

  2. Know what to do if:

  • A person falls overboard

  • Fire or smoke is detected

  • The fire or abandon ship alarm is sounded

  1. Identify muster and embarkation stations and emergency escape routes

  2. Locate and don life-jackets

  3. Raise and alarm and have basic knowledge of the use of portable fire-extinguishers.

  4. Take immediate actions in case of accident or other medical emergencies

  5. Be able to open\close watertight, weathertight and fire-doors of the ship other than doors for hull openings operations
