Урок 8 Синонимы и антонимы. Омофоны.

Synonyms and antonyms. Homophones.

Being able to use the most appropriate word is vital to all writers. To find the most accurate word, writers scan their minds, dictionaries or computers for synonyms, which have the same general meaning but differ in the specific attitude they suggest.

Example: run – sprint, jog, dash, race, etc.

Task 1 Rewrite the sentences, using the synonyms of the underlined words:

  1. It is time for the race to begin.___________________________________________________

  2. The hummingbird is very small._________________________________________________

  3. I enjoy being eight years old.____________________________________________________

  4. The fourth grade class is very noisy._______________________________________________

Task 2 Scan your mind or a dictionary for the synonyms

An antonym is a word that is the opposite or near opposite of another word in meaning. Example: sad/happy, sweet/sour. Successful writers need to make choices about the right word in combination with the best phrasing. The can contrast words an d make comparisons They help readers understand the ideas they want to express through these relations.

Task 3 Finish the following examples:

Caution should be taken to spell the homophones correctly. They are words that sound alike but are different in spelling and meaning.

Example: Clair’s mother said,”No.”

Task 4 Choose the right word from the brackets. Add one more sentence.

Task 5 Homophones are used incorrectly in six places in the newspaper article. Find each mistake. Write six correct homophones.

Yesterday TV Viewers program finished its pole of television watchers. It found that people are watching TV more but liking it less. The viewers’ mane problem was with the number of commercials.
