Spelling rules. Division of words.

Rule 1 Write -i before –e except after –c, or in some other words like “neighbour, their, foreign, seize…”

Task 2 Study this funny sentence and remember the spelling of difficult words :

I went to the field to achieve brief relief in peace, but you won’t believe: horror seized me and I ran back to see the animal frieze in my bedroom.

Now get ready to write the dictation:

Rule 2 When a syllable ends in a consonant preceded by one vowel, double the final consonant before adding a suffix, which begins with a vowel: sit – sitting, sum – summary, forget – unforgettable.

Rule 3 If a word ends with silent –e, drop the –e before adding a suffix, which begins with a vowel: state – stating – statement, use – using – useful. Exceptions include truly, argument, ninth.

Rule 4 When –y is the last letter in a word and the –y comes just after a consonant, change the –y to –i before adding any suffix except those beginning with –i (fry – frying, hurry – hurrying): fry – fries, hurry – hurried, lady –ladies, happy – happiness, beauty – beautiful.

Rule 5 When forming the plural of a word, which ends with the –y that comes just after a vowel, add –s: toy – toys, monkey – monkeys. The same is true about the 3-rd person Present Simple form: say – says, stay – stays, play – plays.

Task 3 Copy the paragraph, opening the brackets.

Matilda hid the parrot behind cupboard in the (dine -ing) room of her house. That evening, while they were all (have-ing) supper un the (live-ing) room in front of the TV, a voice came loud and clear from the (dine-ing) room.

“Hello, hello, hello!” it said.

“Harry!” (cry-ed) Matilda’s mother. “There’s somebody in the house! I heard a voice!” “I’m (get-ing) out of here!” said her husband, his face grey. And they all ran out of the room.

Несколько правил для переноса в конце строки.

1. По возможности избегай переноса. Современные условности освобождают тебя от необходимости разбивать слово в конце строки.

2. В редких случаях, когда ты вынужден это сделать, помни, что:

1. Не разделяются слова, состоящие из одного корня ( come, run), и односложные глаголы с окончанием прошедшего времени -ed (worked,played)

2. Сложные слова делятся по корням или на месте дефиса.

3. Во всех остальных случаях помни и соблюдай правила переноса, принятые в русском языке.

*Одна буква не отделяется от слова

*Слова делятся по слогам

*Двойная согласная всегда разделяется

*Приставки и суффиксы отделяются от корней
