Writing lists is a very useful writing skill, an easy way to organize and remember information. It requires alphabetization – putting words in order according to the alphabet, and separating words by commas in a line.

Example:

Things to buy: soap, milk, bread, butter, chicken.

THINGS TO BUY

bread

butter

chicken

milk

soap

Task 3 Think about five areas of work listed below.

MUSIC

OFFICE WORK

HEALTH

CONSTRUCTION WORK

OUTDOOR WORK

Choose two areas that interest you and think of three jobs that might be offered in each area of work. For example, a guitar player would be a job in the area of music. Write each area of work you have chosen. Then after each one, list the three jobs that might be offered in that area.

Outlines is like categorizing .When you outline information, you separate it into main headings or ideas. Under each main heading, marked by a Roman numeral, you write the facts or information related to the heading. You can list them next to block or cursive letters or Arabic numbers.

Mac Milner wants to organize his time to finish his jobs. Here are his notes (something written down to remind you of something you need to do, say or remember).

JOBS TO DO

*Wash dishes

*Sweep floor

*Empty trash

*Wash car

*Maw lawn

*Weed garden

*Go to market

*Go to cleaners

He decides to outline what he has to do. In the outline Mac Milner has written three headings. Go on writing:

JOBS TO DO

  1. Kitchen jobs

  2. Outdoor jobs

  3. Errands

  1. Wash dishes A. _____________ __________________

  2. Sweep floor _________________ __________________

  3. _____________ _________________

A schedule is also a kind of outline; it is a plan of what someone is going to do and when he or she are going to do it. You can have a very full, tight or busy schedule. People can be ahead of, on or behind the schedule. Here is Mr Tubman’s schedule for Monday. He is an English teacher.

11:00 – class with biology students

12:00 – lunch with editor of the Teacher’s magazine

14:00 – class with agriculture students – CANCELLED

17:00 – dinner with university lecture

Task 4 These are Angela’s plans for Saturday and Sunday. Read and write her weekend schedule. Remember to use a colon between the hour and the minute when you write the time.

On Saturday I am going to get up early, at 8:00, and clean the house. It will take me two hours, then I plan to wash my clothes. I will be very hungry by 12:30, so I will have lunch with Mary, my best friend and neighbor. At 15:00 we have agreed to play a basketball match with our friends. But the highlight of the day is surely going to be a party at Andrew’s. On Sunday I will get up later, at, say, 9:00 in the morning. But I have to study geometry for my Monday test for three hours. Mary and me are going to have lunch at the same time as on Saturday and leave for the cinema at 15:00.
