Cardiac care nurses work primarily with patients that suffer from heart diseases and conditions. They can work in a wide variety of settings including coronary care units, intensive care units, operating theatres, surgical wards, cardiac rehabilitation centers, private clinics and ambulatory care facilities. Some nurses may also be presented with opportunities to work primarily in research.

Cardiac nurses must be able to perform electrocardiograms (EKG) and identify changes to the EKG waveforms that may have pathological significance. It is the job of the cardiac nurse to report these changes to her respective cardiologist and ensure that effective care is given to each patient.

In some hospitals environments, cardiac nurses will be required to assist surgeons in operating rooms and assist physicians in cardiac catheterization labs. The cardiac nurses must have the necessary skills to provide help during the procedures. This may include using specialized equipment. It is also a necessity to be able to perform certain stress tests and diagnostic tests and to administer medication through intravenous therapy.

Tasks all registered specialist cardiac nurses must be competent in include interpretation of electrocardiograms, monitoring a patient's vital signs and cardiac health, dealing with surgical infections, caring for wounds, handling patient arrhythmia, pain and neurological problems. Where appropriate or necessary, they must collaborate with other health care professionals such as the patient's cardiologist, physiotherapist, or nutritionist, to devise and implement a care and recovery plan specific for that patient.

The conditions they treat can include: angina, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, cardiac dysrhythmia under the direction of a cardiologist and post surgical care after bypasses, angioplasties and pacemaker implants. They also perform stress test evaluations, cardiac monitoring, vascular monitoring, and health assessments. Specialized skills include electrocardiogram monitoring, defibrillation and medical administration through intravenous drip.
