1. Домашнє завдання.

Т: Do it in writing. Role situation. Imagine you are at the department store, you are doing Christmas shopping. You're going to buy presents for each member of your family, but you can't afford expensive things.

Make up a dialogue with a shop-assistant and write it down. Read task 7, p. 118-119 and say what you think of the main hеroes.

2. Підбиття підсумків уроку.

T: Today you learned how to do shopping at the department stores.

Close your books and try to recall those phrases the customers usually use to buy something.

At the next lesson we'll roleplay "Shopping". Look carefully at your things at home and decide what you need, what you would like to buy at our imaginary shop.

Підтема: Покупка одягу, взуття.

Мета: Ознайомити з британською та американською таблицями розмірів. Вчити спілкуватися під час покупки одягу та взуття. Сприяти оволодінню учнями комунікативною компетенцією на рівні вживання.

Мовний матеріал: питальні структури.

Обладнання: підручник, фрази продавця (НО,), фрази покупця (Н02), на дошці аргументи команд А, В,

розмовні формули для складання логічно зв'язної усної розповіді (Н03).

Хід уроку

І. ПІДГОТОВКА ДО СПРИЙНЯТТЯ ІНШОМОВНОГО МОВЛЕННЯ

1. Повідомлення теми та мети уроку.

Т: Today at the lesson you'll get acquainted with European, British and American sizes of clothes and footwear.

By the end of the lesson you should be able to talk with a shop-assistant when buying clothes or shoes. Besides, we'll discuss the story given to you for home reading.

2. Уведення в іншомовну атмосферу.

Divide Class into two teams.

1) Grouping Exercise. Вправа для розділення класу на групи.

On the cards write the phrases which can be heard in a shop or at a department store.

— What can I do for you?

— Which one would you like?

— How much would you like?

— Here you are. It suits you perfectly.

— May I help you?

— Do you want anything else?

— Here is your bill.

— Pay at the cashdesk, please.

— What can I get for you today?

— Here is your change. Thank you.

— Could you show me that hat?

— My size in Ukraine is 37.

— I'd like to buy a nice dress for my sister.

— Will you wrap it up, please?

— Where can I pay for it?

— I'd like to try it on.

— I don't like the colour.

— Can you give me another one?

— One loaf of white bread, please.

— What's the price of it?

Pupils having got the cards read the phrases and arrange themselves into 2 groups: customers and shop-assistants.

T: Now, you'll try to make a conclusion and to assure the opposite team that you are

right.

Where is it better to buy clothes and footwear?

Divide the board into 2 halves. The teams (groups A, B) give their arguments to prove

that it's better to do shopping:

A. At the department store.

B. At the marker.

(Sample arguments:)

- All the things are cheaper.

- You can buy everything you want in

- You can bargain.

- There are goods of different quality,

- There are fitting rooms there.

— There are not so many people as at

- It is safe. Etc.

The team having more arguments wins.

II. ОСНОВНА ЧАСТИНА УРОКУ

1. Складання діалогів.

Т: You were to compose dialogues with shop-assistants while doing imaginary Christmas

shopping.

Work in pairs. Pracffee simultaniously. Рґ give your copybook with the dialogue to P2. P2 is a shop-assistant. He/she reads the words of a shop-assistant written bv vou. Pr PJt act out the situation. Then, change roles: P2 Pr

2. Ознайомлення з таблицею розмірів.

Т: What is necessary to know when you choose clothes or shoes?

— Your size, of course.

Let's get acquainted with British and American size standards.

Do you know your size?

Now, match your size to the British and American ones according to the table given on p. 64.

3. Тренування учнів у діалогічному мовленні.

Roleplay.

Use the task given in ex. 38, p. 63, use your data, use the conversation from ex. 37, p. 63 and compose your own dialogue with a shop-assistant, then act it out. When acting don't read, but speak.

4. Робота з текстом для домашнього читання, завдання 7 (стор. 118—119).

1) Pre-reading activity. Vocabulary Practice. Етап підготовки до читання тексту. Т: Try to memorize several new words given below the text.

It will help you to enrich your vocabulary in order to be able to carry on a conversation on any suggested topic in English.

Find the sentences in the text with these words, then make up your own sentences with them in accordance with reality. Try to be natural.

2) While-reading activity. Виконання вправ під час читання.

Т: Do ex. 2 on p. 119, then answer three more questions in order to charactarize the main heroes.

3) Post-reading activity with a focus on speaking. Обговорення та переказ тексту.

а) Т: What did you think about the painter at the beginning of the story? Did your opinion change after that ugly scene at Miss Martha's shop?

What do you think Miss Martha felt after she had realized why the painter had

visited her shop regularly?

Did she feel sorry or disappointed?

You were to invent the ending of the story. Your endings are really interesting. But

the author's ending is rather unexpectable.

б) Retelling the story.

T: Imagine that you are Miss Martha and you are telling the story to your best

friend asit happened to you a short time ago.

Then, tell this story as if you are the draftsman.

While telling your stories don't forget the rule of sequence of tenses.

And to make your speech more natural and the story more logically connected use

the formulars given below.
