LIW №5 |
Everyone suddenly burst out singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom,
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards and dark-green fields;
on - on - and out of sight.
Everyone's voice was suddenly lifted;
And beauty came like the setting sun:
My heart was shaken with tears;
and horror
Drifted away ... O, but Everyone Was a bird; and the song was wordless;
the singing will never be done.

GRAMMAR COMMENT
Revision of Past tenses
The past tenses in English: English uses three forms of the past, the Simple Past, the Present Perfect, and the past perfect, sometimes called the pluperfect. All of these forms can also be used in a progressive form . The simple past. This is used to relate past events in a historic context. Often, you will know that it must be used, because the sentence also contains an adverb (or adverb phrase) of time, such as yesterday, or a date or time. Example: 1) Queen Victoria died in 1901. Past progressive or past continuous: Here are some examples with a progressive or continuous form too: both of the events in the sentence are "historic", but one took place while another longer-lasting situation was true: 5) John Lennon died while he was living in New York. 6) The students shouted as the President was speaking. The past perfect or past perfect continuous. The past perfect, as in He had seen, is normally only used in English when one past event (either a specific action, or a continuous condition) has to be situated in a more distant past than another past event. In some situations, the progressive or continuous form is necessary. Examples: I had just put the phone down, when the doorbell rang. There are some other uses too, but they are less common. Note, for example, the use of the past perfect (and inversion) after hardly: Hardly had I put the phone down, than the phone rang. |
Put suitable form of the verbs in brackets, using Past Continuous and Past Simple.
Last week the police (stop) Tom in his car because he (drive) at over 100 km.
When I arrived to the party, everybody (to dance).
Yesterday we (to write) an interesting story about our free time.
He (to listen) to the music, when his mother came.
The engineers (to discuss) this problem the whole evening yesterday.
Translate the following sentences from English into Russian orally.
Он разговаривал со своим другом вчера в 2 часа.
В 5 часов вчера мы обедали в ресторане.
Мы встретимся завтра в 2 часа в следующем месяце.
Он читал газеты в своей комнате с 5 до 6 вчера.
Вчера весь день он играл на пианино.
