Exercise 1. Read and translate the dialogues and text:

Dialogue 1. At a passport and customs desk

A: Your passport, please. How long are you planning to stay in the country?

B: Three weeks. Could I prolong my entrance vise in case of necessity?

A: Sure. The receiving party will take care of it.

B: Well, bags on the table and your customs-form, please.

A: How much do they weight?

B: 23 kilos. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to pay an excess baggage charge.

A: Oh! It’s only three kilos overweight.

B: Yes, sir…that’s £6… Thank you. Have you anything to declare?

A: What?

B: Alcohol, cigarettes, fresh fruit, plants?

A: Uh, no. Only for personal needs.

B: Open your suitcase, please. Any gifts?

A: Only one bottle of vodka.

B: All right. It is duty free. As you probably know, it is forbidden to bring more than two bottles of alcohol and two blocks of cigarettes to England. And no limitations as to currency. Here is your form.

A: Thank you.

B: Not at all. The next please.

Dialogue 2. At the terminal

Steven: Are you lost?

Stephan: Hi, Steven!

Steven: Hello, Stephan. We’re over there.

Stephan: Oh yes, flight BA946 from Munich.

Steven: Here are the cases.

Stephan: One case, one rucksack and one travel bag. They’re all here.

Steven: Are they heavy?

Stephan: The case very heavy?

Steven: Can you lift it?

Stephan: Yes, I can, but I can’t carry it!

Steven: Oh yes, it is heavy. Here are two trolleys.

Stephan: Oh, good !...

Steven: Here we are – Customs Control.

Stephan: Red, green or blue exit?

Steven: Blue – for the EU.

Stephan: The European Union!

Steven: That’s right!

Text 1. Travelling

Nowadays travelling abroad is very popular. Some people prefer to travel by plane, especially businessmen, because it’s the fastest means of transportation. Those who are not short of time usually travel by train or by ship. It takes more time but gives the opportunity to see the country you travel through, its picturesque landscapes and nature.

While travelling abroad you have to go through customs, sometimes several times.

As a rule the customs officers check your passports and visas if they are required. When coming to some countries you may need a health certificate or a certificate of vaccination. If you have anything to declare, then you are to fill in the declaration form.

The customs officers may ask you to show your luggage to them. Usually articles for personal use and wear and also used items and gifts are not liable to duty anywhere. If you are carrying much currency you should also declare it. If you are carrying weapons you need a permit. Although some items are liable to duty, if you carry only a small amount of them, they are duty free.

Occasionally the customs officers may take some of your things for a more detailed inspection but usually they return them soon.

Do not try to break the customs rules and regulations because you may a lot of troubles.
