  1. Read the following information. Pay attention to the active vocabulary: Family Types

There are several different types of families all around the world including the nuclear families, one-child families, large families, extended families, childless families, single-parent families, adoptive families and homosexual couples with children.

Nuclear families consist of two parents with one or more children. Such kind of family is called the ‘traditional family’. There are three types of married nuclear families: where the man works outside the home while the woman works inside the home caring for the children; when the woman works outside the home, the man cares for the children; and then there is where both the man and the woman work outside the home (dual-income family).

One-child families are obviously families with only one child. These children tend to have closer relationship with their parents and appear to be bright, self-confident, resourceful and popular with other children because of it.

Large families consist of parents with several children. These children learn how to socialize, have companionship, emotional support and assistance while they are growing up. The interaction between children contributes to moral maturity, perspective talking and competence in relating to other children. Some children may get ignored and experience rivalry for parents’ attention.

Extended families are families where two or more adults from different generations share a household. This may include cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, foster children, etc. More children are raised by grandparents because both parents have to work. There has been a rapid increase of this type of family in the past few years.

Childless families are families without any children. Family members have more free time and greater financial resources. This type of family usually has pets.

Single-parent families are families where there is only one parent raising the child/children and it is currently the fastest growing family type. A majority of these families are headed by women, and children often have negative stereotypes and hurtful remarks put on them by others. Usually the parent and children cooperate and find solutions to solve household problems more easily.

In adoptive families the children experience some degree of emotional distress and abandonment.

Homosexual couples with children are when there are parents of the same sex.
