Glands must be well packed by changing the packings periodically. Grease lubricators must be always well provided with grease. During long standing still periods it is recommended to have the shaft rotate by manually operating on the coupling at least once every two days.

Prior to Raising Steam.

Before raising steam a thorough inspection of the boiler should be made. The inspection should apply internally and externally, and should include the following essential points:

1. Internal surfaces clean and free from scale.

2. Tubes proved clear by the use of searching wires or steel balls.

3. Internal fittings properly secured.

4. Water gauge passages and other boiler mounting apertures clear.

5. Boiler valves and cocks proved workable and left shut.

6. Safety valves workable by hand-easing gear and left shut.

7. Combustion chamber and gas passages sighted for cleanliness with refractory brickwork in good repair and expansion allowances clear.

8. Manhole doors and handhole plugs in position with good joints and tight satisfactory.

9. Superheated steam temperature control, desuperheater control valve put in manual control and positioned so that all the steam passing through the superheater bypasses the control desuperheater.
