Starting.
1. Open pump suction check valve wide, opening at the same time the air vent on the top side in order to facilitate the complete filling up of the pump casing.
2. Close air vent just as soon as liquid flows out of it.
3. Leaving discharge check valve closed, start motor.
4. As soon as unit starts running check that direction of rotation is as indicated by the arrow.
5. Slowly open discharge check valve until operating requirements are reached.
6. On ammeter check that power requirements do not exceed motor permissible rating.
7. Check tightness of packing gland which must be tightened slowly and slightly by working on both the stud nuts in order to have the packing gland advance in parallel manner until leaks are reduced to a few drops. A few drops are required to seep through in order to prevent harmful heating of packings and shaft.
During Operation.
The pump output, in conformity to the service requirements is to be controlled by operating on the discharge valve and never on the suction which must always remain wide open.
Stopping.
When motor has been switched off, close suction and discharge valves of the pump.

Card 9. Trouble-shooting
Trouble-Shooting.
1. Motor heats up.
Check that the pump does not run with a head lower than provided for. Throttle discharge valve up to maximum load permitted by the motor.
2. Pump does not reach the required head.
Check that direction of rotation is correct; check that speed of motor is not lower than the speed indicated by the dataplate.
3. Pump does not deliver water.
Check that the pump casing is full of liquid. Check that no air enters the suction line. The suction pipe might be clogged.
4. The pump has insufficient capacities.
Pump rotates in wrong direction. Suction pipe too long or partially clogged. Suction vacuum too high. This can be seen by the degree of vacuum recorded by the vacuum gauge. Seal rings are worn-out; change them.
5. Packing gland heats up.
Check that the pipe conveying water to the packing gland lantern is not clogged. Check that the packings are not tightened up too much.
