Hiring

I believe that the leader should have at least a 2-minute interview with everybody the operation is seriously hiring, if only to see that the applicant’s personality will fit. People should be selected very carefully because they are going to be around for a long time. They should be interviewed by at least three levels of supervision and a peer or two. They should come back for a second interview and be asked all the specific questions possible under the equal employment laws. As to the number of people to hire, we should never hire people when doing so would reduce the revenue per employee, and we should hire people only when there are actual jobs to do, not when we are betting on the future.

Firing

Every now and then, someone does not fit into the organization and has to be let go. Unless there is some cause involved, such as fraud or another method of betraying a trust, firing should be considered a very serious matter. The act terminating someone from a company involves more than severing the relationship between an individual and a company. It also makes other people nervous.

The main thing should come out of a firing is an understanding of where the selection process went wrong (what let that person be hired in the first place) or of where the training and discipline activities of the company were inadequate. Firing should be done as graciously as possible and with as little pain to employees as possible. They should be sent out into the world without condemnation and without lack of references. Some managers are super impatient or do not have the means to do proper evaluation. If more than I percent of a company’s population is fired in a year, there is a very severe problem.

Human resources

Human resources departments attempt to handle the relations between a company and its employees on the basis of the fact the employees really are a valuable resource of the company, not just something said to be a valuable resources. The structure necessary to manage this function is personnel, industrial, relations, wellness centers, child care, medical insurance, and so on.

One problem is that professionals in this field don’t seem very Sensitive to the people. They are much more sensitive to needs of administration. This is because they have not learned to administer and still be empathetic at the same time. Human resources departments often state that the majority of complaints they hear are about their companies treat people.

Human resources needs to lead the way in relations by helping to cause clear understanding about companies policies and practices. Then the employees can have some input.
