GULLIVER’ S TRAVEL

My father had a small house and some l and in Nottinghamshire; I was the third of five sons. He sent me to college for there years, where I studied very hard, but my father could not keep me there any longer, for it cost too much. I was therefore sent to Mr. James Bates, a well known surgeon in London, with whom I worked and studied. Sometimes my father sent me small sums of money, which I spent on learning navigation.

After four years, I was recommended by my master, to be surgeon to the Swallow.

I remained there three years and a half, making a voyage or two in the Mediterranean Sea and some other parts of the world. When I came back I decided to settle in London.

Mr. Bates died two years ago and I decided to go again to sea. I accepted an offer as surgeon…

On our voyage to the East Indies, we were driven by a violent storm. Twelve of our crew died because of hard work and bad food, the others were in a very weak condition.

Six of the crew, of whom I was one, got into a small boat and so were able to get away from the ship…

THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER

In the old city of London on a cold autumn day a boy was born to a poor family of the name Canty. The family did not want this boy.

On the same day another English child was born. He was born to a rich family of the name Tudor, who wanted him very much.

All England wanted him. People talked only about the new baby. Edward Tudor.

But there was no talk about the other baby, Tom Canty.

A few years passed. London was fifteen hundred years old and was a great town.

The street where Toms Family lived was not far from London Bridge. It was dirty, and the houses were of wood, with small windows. Canty’s family lived in one room on the third floor of one of these houses.

The mother and the father had a bed, but Tom, his grandmother, and his two sisters slept on the floor and covered themselves with rags.

The sisters were fifteen years old. They were twins. They were kind-hearted girls. Their mother was like them. But the father and the grandmother were very bad people. They often got drunk and beat the children. Tom s father was a thief, and Tom s grandmother was a beggar, and they made the children beg.

Every day Tom went on to beg in the streets. If nobody gave him any money, his father and grandmother beat him.

But there were some good things in Tom’s life. Among the people that lived in the house there was a kind man who taught Tom a little Latin and how to read and write. STORIES FROM THE JUNGLE BOOK

Now for ten years Mougli grew up with the cubs and Father Wolf taught him everything that wolves know about the Jungle. When he was not learning, he sat out in the sun and slept and ate and went to sleep again. When he felt dirty or hot, he swam in the forest pools. When he wanted honey, he climbed up trees for it.

He discovered that when he looked hard at one of the wolves, the wolf dropped his eyes. At other time he took long thorns out of the paws of his friends, for wolves suffer terrible from thorns.

Sometimes he went down the hillside into the fields by night and looked very curiously at the villagers in their huts.

He grew stronger and stronger. He did not know he was learning any lessons, and he thought of nothing but things to eat.

Mother Wolf told him once or twice that he must not trust.

… “I was born in the jungle. There is no wolf from whose paw I have not pulled a thorn .Surely they are my brothers!“ said Mougli.

UNCLE TOM’ S CABIN

…My master traded with one of the men, and bought my oldest sister. She was a good girl and was well brought up, and had good manners. At first, I was glad she was bought, for I had one friend near me, I was soon sorry for it. She was whipped for wanting to live a decent Christian life, such as your laws give no slave girl a right to live; and at last I saw her in chains. She was sent to market in Orleans – and that s the last I know of her.

Well, I grew up-long years and years, – no father, no mother, no sister, not a living soul that cared for me more than a dog. Nothing but whipping, scolding, starving. I was always hungry and was glad to take the bones they threw to their dogs.

When I was a little fellow, and laid awake whole nights and cried, it wasn’t the hunger, it wasn’t the whipping, I cried for. It was for my mother and my sisters. – It was because I hadn’t a friend to love me on earth. I never knew what peace or comfort was

You, Mr. Wilson, treated me well, you encouraged me to do well, and to read and write and I am grateful for it very much.

Then, I found my wife. You know how beautiful she is.

But now what? Why, now comes my master, takes me right away from my work, and my friends.

JANE EYRE

Nobody slept in the room, yet it was one of the largest and richest rooms in the house.

A dark bed with red curtains stood in the middle of the room; the two large windows were also covered with dark red curtains, the carpet was red too; the table at the foot of the bed was covered with a red table-cloth; the wardrobe, the toilet-table, the chair were of dark red wood, only the pillows and an armchair near the bed were white.

The room was cold, for it seldom had a fire, it was silent, because it was far from the nursery and kitchen, gloomy, because nobody lived in it.

Nobody liked to go into the room since Mr Reed s death.

My stool was near the chimney: the bed was before me; to my right hand there was the high, dark wardrobe; to my left were the windows; a great looking-glass between them repeated all the things in the room.

I got up and went to the door. Alas! It was shut and locked. On my way back I had to cross before the looking-glass. All looked colder and darker in it, and the little figure, that was looking at me with a white face and eyes full of fear, was like a ghost. I returned to my stool.

ROBERT SHANNON THE ACADEMY

The Academy was an old grey building in the High Street with long, long corridors and not classrooms, filled with the smell of chalk. children and gas.

On the morning that I was to enter that house, I woke up filled with fear and excitement. Grandma told me that my suit was ready.

The first sight of my new suit alarmed me so much, that I did not know what to say. It was green, not dark green, but a gay and lively one.

“Put it on,” she said with pride.

The jacket was very large, the trousers were too long.

“Good, good,” said Grandma. “It covers you well. I made it for your growth”.

“But the colour, Grandma? ” I protested weakly.

“Colour? What’s wrong with the colour? It’s good material. It will never wear out.”

I turned pale. Looking attentively at my suit I now noticed in the material a stripe of little roses. Very beautiful for Grandma ’s petticoat, but for a boy’s suit…

“May I put on my old suit this morning, Grandma?”

“What nonsense! I cut it up for dusters last night.”

I went out into the cold grey morning alarmed and ashamed. People in the street turned round to look at me. I didn’ t go along the main street.

After some difficulty I found the second class. As I entered Mr. Dalgleish at his desk had already finished the first lesson. I tried to go quietly to a vacant desk, but the teacher stopped me in the middle of the room. I now saw, with fear that he was displeased! But he did not shout at me. Instead he climbed down from his desk and walked round me slowly, with his head to one side. The class was frightened and excited.

“So!” he said at last. “We are the new boy. And we have a new suit.”

The children began to laugh. I was silent.

“Well, sir. Where did you buy it? ”

Pale to the lips I whispered: “ My Great-Grandma made it, sir. ”

A roar of laughter from the class. Mr.Dalgleish, unsmiling, continued to walk round me.

“A remarkable colour. And very suitable. You are from Ireland? ”

Another roar of laughter from the class. Among the laughing faces there were only two that did not smile: Gavin Blair, in the front row and Alison Keith, who looked at me with troubled eyes.

JANE EYRE AT CHARITY SCHOOL

The next morning was very cold. The water in the jugs was frozen and we could not wash. The day began as before with prayers and Bible-reading. Breakfast time came at last and this morning the porridge was not burnt. But how small my portion was! I could easily eat two such portions.

I became a pupil of the fourth class. At first the lessons seemed long and difficult to me because I did not know how to learn things by heart; and I was glad when at about three o’clock in the afternoon one of the teachers put into my hands a piece of stuff and a needle and sent me to sew in a corner of the school-room. One class still stood round their teacher’s chair. They were having a lesson: it was English history. In that class I saw the girl who spoke to me in the morning. The teacher was continually addressing her.

“Burns!” (That was her name) “You Burns! Hold your head up!” “Don’t stand like this!” and so on and so on.

At first the girls read a chapter from their books then the teacher began to question them. Many questions seemed difficult for the girls; Burns answered them all, but the teacher did not praise her. Instead of that, she suddenly cried out.

‘You dirty girl! You have not cleaned your nails this morning!”

“Why,” thought I, “doesn’t Helen explain that she could not clean her nails or wash her face this morning because the water was frozen?”

At that moment my teacher called me. When I returned to my chair, I saw that Burns was going out of the classroom. She returned in half a minute with a bundle of twigs in her hands. She gave it to her teacher, then, without a word, she unloosed her pinafore and the teacher struck her on the neck with the bundle of twigs. Burns did not cry.

FAMILY LIFE IS CHANGING IN BRITAIN

Years ago it was important to have large families. The best Victorian mother was the mother who had many children. The proudest Victorian father was the father who had sons but not daughters. It was important to have many children so that the family remained strong. If you were rich, you needed sons to inherit your property. If you were poor, you needed sons to help with your work and take it over when you were old. Rich or poor, you needed daughters to help with the running of a large household and to make good marriages with other families.

Not only children were important. Everybody in the family was important: grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and cousins of cousins.

Nowadays, things are quite different. Young people move away from the places where they were born looking for any job, and they take their immediate family (wife and children) with them. Slowly, they lose touch with their distant cousins and their great-aunts. Their own family unit becomes more and more important, as they forget their other relations.

In Britain, people have fewer children because children are expensive to raise. Who can afford a large house? Who can afford food for more than three children when the cost of living is so high?

II. Ответьте на вопросы:

OF THE PARENTS OF THOMAS WINGFIELD

Thomas Wingfield was born here in the very room where I write today.

My grandfather had only one son – my father. His great wish was to make a priest of him, but my father did not like the idea. Still he could not disobey his father and was obliged to go to a convent and prepare for his profession. But he behaved so badly that the prior at last begged my grandfather to take his son home.

When the boy grew older my grandfather decided to send him to Spain to study at a convent. My father agreed to go to Spain, for he wanted to see the world.

A year later a priest came from Spain and told my grandfather that his son had been fired from the convent and they had not heard anything of him since.

Two years later the news came that my father had fallen into the hands of the Inquisition and had been tortured to death.

My grandfather was very sad, though he did not really believe that his son was dead and always awaited his return.

… But it was only three years after the old man’s death that my father came home with his young wife who was a Spaniard.

My father never spoke about his life in Spain. But once I saw white scars on his body. I asked my father about them.

“Thomas”, he said, “There is a country called Spain where your mother was born. There these devils live. They torture men and women and burn them alive in the name of Christ. YORK

The city of York is in the North of England. Seven centuries ago it was famous for its religious drama, called mystery plays. Thousand years before that it was famous as the greatest Roman city of the north. Much of tradition in this city lives in.

The cathedral with its magnificent strained glass windows, and the narrow streets are almost unchanged since medieval times. The old houses that crowd along the streets sometimes lean so close to each other that two people can shake hands from the first floor windows.

York is famous all over Britain for its railway carriage works, and all over the world for its confectionary, but any expansion of industry in the city seems unlikely.

York has a university. This makes a tremendous impact on the cultural life of the city, because a lot of people living there are connected with the university.

A number of them will want a theatre of high standard, and the best films and music they can get. York is now beginning to provide these facilities.

CAMBRIDGE

Cambridge is world famous principally as a university city and undoubtedly owes much of its character and history to the development of the university and college during the past seven hundred years. Peterhouse, founded in 1284, was the first college and now there are twenty-two/ Many of them are grouped together and with their buildings surrounding green courts, their fine chapels, halls and libraries, and the tree-lined Backs, they create a picture of Cambridge as one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in Great Britain. The Backs, the pride of Cambridge, are a stretch of the river Cam which winds its placid way between the mellow walls of the college. Their smooth lawns are magnificent views. The scene across the Backs to the pinnacled King’s College Chapel is breathtaking, and the Chapel itself, built between 1446 and 1515, is one of the great architectural glories of Britain.

Other Cambridge buildings worthy of note include the Round Church and the Fitzwilliam Museum, a treasure-house of original manuscripts, statuary, tapestry and archeological discoveries.

Cambridge has not completed with other towns of similar size in the field of industrial expansion, but has successfully retained its true character as a university city. Nevertheless, many important light industries have been established in Cambridge.

ENERGY CRISES

All over the world there is an “energy crisis”. The high price of oil is affecting people everywhere. Some countries, especially the very developed ones, feel the difficulties immediately. Others will have problems later. In Britain at present the “energy crisis” is partly because of expensive oil and partly because of British coal miners. They do not work as many hours as usual because they demand higher wages. The Government does nothing to satisfy miners’ demands. Coal is a very important fuel for electrical power as well as in homes. In order to save heat and light, businesses, offices and industries can only work three days a week. Many people have no work. The miners want to show everyone how dangerous and hard their job is.

Conditions in the British mines are still most unpleasant and hard. It is a very difficult job for a man mentally and physically. The new machinery which cuts coal makes the air less dirty than twenty years ago, but the noise is head-splitting.

The passages of 84cm wide are not much room for men to work and breathe in. The miners must crawl along and often they are sitting in water. The miners remind of the terrible accidents in mines where shafts collapse and bury men underground. They receive serious injuries and die. Minor accidents are part of everyday life – many men lose fingers in the machinery. Every day 50 out of 1,000 men at one pit are not at work because of injuries. Coal dust causes a lung disease which kills three hundred men every year.

SISTER CARRIE

When Caroline Meeber took the afternoon train, her total baggage consisted of a small trunk, a cheap bag, a small lunch in a paper box, and a yellow leather purse, containing her ticket, a slip of paper with her sister’s address in Chicago, and four dollars.

It was in August, 1889. She was eighteen years old, bright, timid, and full of illusions, of ignorance and youth. Her thoughts were not regretful. Sudden tears at her mother’s last kiss, a sad feeling when the train passed by the mill where her father worked, a pathetic sigh as the familiar green gardens of the village passed in view.

Of course there was always the next station, where she could descend and return. There was the great city, where the trains came up daily ….

She looked at the little slip with her sister’s address and thought of what awaited her there. She looked at the green landscape, now passing in quick review, until her quicker thoughts of the future life in Chicago replaced its impression.

Caroline, or Sister Carrie, as she had been called by the family, had no great power of observation and analysis.

The new pupil was too short-sighted to play games but she worked hard in the classroom, and if politics were discussed she was acknowledged to be supreme. ANIMALS’ SEVENTH SENSE

The town of Concepeton, 250 miles south of Santiago in Chile, has a strange history. The people who live there still talk about the curious episode which happened in 1935.

At about 10.30 one morning all birds in the town suddenly took to the air, swirling and screaming. This chaos lasted for about an hour, also suddenly animals began to join in. First the horses started whinging and running around as if they gone crazy. Rats appeared from nowhere, filling the streets. Dogs ran out of the houses, calling with rats in their hurry. The human inhabitants had no idea of what was going on.

Ten minutes later, at 11.40 they found out: a major earthquake hit the town and destroyed it.

How could these animals have been warned that something was going on to happen when people were not? The incident in Concepeton started a research which proved that animals and plants can have strange powers, which human beings do not have.

Animals possess at least two senses that have never developed in humans. One is an electrical field which helps some fish to find food and to feel the difference between friend and enemy. The seventh sense, common to many animals, is called “the third eye”.

It allows the animals to see what their normal eyes cannot see.

MY NEW HOME

Early in May there came a man who took me away. My mother said, “Good bye, Darkie; be a good horse and always do your best.” I could not say “Good bye”, so I put my nose into his hand; he patted me kindly and then I left my first home. My new home was very good too. My stable was very large. It had four good stalls and a large window which opened on the yard. So we had plenty of air and it was very pleasant. My stall was called a loose box. The horse in a loose box is not tired up but quite free and can move about easily. It is a great thing to have a loose box.

The groom gave some very nice oats, patted me, spoke kindly, and then went away.

In the stall next to mine stood a little fat grey pony, with a thick mane and tail, a very pretty head, and a pert little nose.

I said”How do you do? What is your name?”

After he died I tell you to go to the House of Shaws, it is near Edinburgh,” said Mr.Campbell. “The family who live there, my boy, have the same name as you”…
