COURSE PRE-REQUISITES: Media Discourse and Culture, Multiculturalism and Media Culture School of Media and Cultural Studies.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Sociolinguistics is the study of the relation between language and society and language and culture. It deals with ways in which language serves to define and maintain group identity and social relationships among speakers. Students will learn about a variety of topics dealing with the general theme of language in its social context. Our scope will also be extended to address the educational, political, and social repercussions of language use from a sociolinguistic perspective. This course will introduce to students various sociolinguistic approaches and methods used for collecting and presenting data for the study of language in society. The purpose of this course is to enable students to think critically over the nature and function of language in our society and to work collaboratively on empirical research projects for sociolinguistics study.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. gain a comprehensive view of sociolinguistics study;
2. grasp the various quantitative and qualitative methods for sociolinguistics study;
6. compile glossaries, analyze results, and present findings in an academic style;
7. develop a critical sociolinguistic awareness of language in use;
8. demonstrate the ability to perform independent research (project paper);
9. prepare and make presentations on specific sociolinguistic topics and coordinate the classroom discussion;
10. critique other students’ presentations and make suggestions for improvement.
