Valaam

Valaam is the biggest island in the northern part of Ladoga Lake. The nature of Valaam is unique. More than 460 kinds of the plants grow on the island. Valaam has an ancient and complicated history. In the remote past, a place of worship of heathen gods was located on the island. According to a legend in the 1st century St. Apostle Andrew arrived at Valaam and hoisted the Cross there as a token of enlightenment of that land by Christ’s light. In the 10th century, before Russia became Christian, the founders of the cloister, St. Serge and St. Herman, Miracle-Workers of Valaam, came to the island.

The orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ, founded on the island of Valaam, many times repelled Swedes’ attacks. The monastery was ruined in the 17th century and restored in the 18th century.

In the middle of the 19th century, the monastery of Valaam reached the high point of its flourishing. Many monastery workshops, a dairy farm, photographer’s and icon-painting studios, and a library began their activities during this period. The monks were occupied with agriculture and fishing, satisfying the needs of the monastic brotherhood and all visitors to the island. In the summer months, Valaam was flooded with groups of pilgrims from neighboring regions. People came to the monasteries to play and to get spiritually refreshed.

From 1811 to 1917, the Valaam archipelago was a member of the principality of Finland of the Russian empire. From 1917 to 1940, the territory was under the jurisdiction of Finland. In February 1940, the monastery of Valaam was evacuated to Finland, where the New Valaam Monastery started functioning. When the monks were driven out, the monastery housed a School of Sea Cadets, and after the war there was a Home for Invalids.
