VII. Прочитайте и письменно переведите текст на русский язык: Pskov region

People began to settle in the territory of the present Pskov region approximately 10-12 thousand years ago. In the first Russian Chronicle, the Pskov area is described as a Trade route from Scandinavia to Byzantium in the 11th-12th centuries. The city of Pskov has a lot of ancient Russian architectural monuments and paintings. There are about a hundred such ancient treasures within its territory. The most famous of them are the Mirozhsky monastery, the Church of Vartaan Knutynsky.

There are 14 towns and 8,143 rural settlements in the region. The population of the Pskov region is 835,000. The population density in this region is 15,1 people per km2. The Pskov region is divided into 26 administrative districts. The main towns of the Pscov region are: Pscov, Velikiye Luki, Ostrov, Nevel.

The Velikaya and Pskova rivers divide the city into three parts. The ancient city proper name is “the centre” but Pskovites call it the “city”. The territory beyond the Velikaya River has the historical name of “Zavelichiye”; beyond the Pskova River – “Zapskoviye”. The city is surrounded with the fortress walls where one can see a masterpiece of ancient Russian architecture – the Kremlin.

The main street of modern Pskov is Oktyabrsky Prospect. There are other beautiful churches in Pskov: St. Basil’s Church on the Hill and the church of St.Nicolas on the Usokha. There are many places of interest in Pskov: the Pskov Historical Architecture and the Fine Arts Museum; Pogankin’s Chambers (the house of one of Pskov’s merchants); the Letny park, the Botanichesky Garden; the modern monument to A.Pushkin and his nanny Arina Rodionovna; a monument to the soldiers who perished during the Great Patriotic War; and Pokrovskaya Tower (40 m. in height, 90 m. in diameter).
