Grammar: Modal Verbs

а) Формування граматичної компетенції.

Учні читають правило й розбирають його за допомогою вчителя.

Модальні дієслова не виражають дії або стану, а лише можливість,

бхідність, бажаність, імовірність, сумнів, дозвіл, заборону,

здатність виконання дії, позначеної інфінітивом.

Вживаються лише в сполученні з інфінітивом іншого дієслова.

Для вираження припущення, сумніву, невпевненості, можливої ПО­ДІЇ у майбутньому слід використовувати модальні дієслова, have to, must:

I must hurry to catch the last train.

You have to come in time.

Для вираження необхідності, нагальної потреби, морального обов’язку слід використовувати модальні дієслова may, might Ta could:

He might get the tickets for the concert.

We may translate this text together.

Для вираження жалю чи вини слід використовувати модальне дієслово ought to have:

We ought to have ideas how to help him.

Для вираження обов’язку чи зобов’язання слід використовувати модальні дієслова should Ta must:

We should help him.

6. A major report on global warming has warned that average world temperatures may rise by several degrees in the next century, due to the build-up of “greenhouse gases” in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Every year more and more plants and animals disappear never to be seen again. In many lakes and rivers fish are dying and some lakes have no fish at all. Trees are also in serious danger.

7. If people of the world don’t unite their efforts against acid rains, trees and fish will die and we will too.

The great rainforests of Asia and South America are being destroyed for firewood and building material.

8. As the Earth gets hotter, the ice caps and glaciers may melt and sea levels may rise. It’s time for action before we’re all sunk!

Man’s unrestricted cutting of trees disturbs the natural balance. Some­thing must be done.
