Ex. IX. The Chief Officer checks your compliance with the Master’s standing orders for bridge watch. Tell him what you’ve done during the watch using the verbs given below:

to obtain and chart vessel’s position, to compare visual fixes with radar, to take celestial observations, to keep echo sounder on, to use radars, to make the appropriate notes, to take and record compass error, to check chronometer error, to log distress messages in the radio log, to receive distress messages, to carry out weekly and daily tests, to follow all checklists, to inform the Master, to investigate the course, to take rounds in the accommodation, to take precautions, to pay attention to public places, to keep both radars on

Master’s Standing Orders for Bridge watch

  1. Vessel’s position must be frequently obtained and charted. Visual fixes must be obtained when available and compared with radar, GPS and Loran.

  2. Celestial observations are to be taken, whenever possible and record of the same is to be kept in the Sight Book.

  3. Echo sounder is to be kept on in waters with depth of less than 50 meters.

  4. Radars are to be used judiciously. Keep always both radars on or on stand by mode. Even in port the radars are to be kept on stand by when not in use. Record of the use of the radar is to be made in the log Book. ARPA is to be used when keeping watch single-handedly and at night.

  5. Compass error is to be taken every watch and recorded in the Compass Error Book. If it cannot be taken during a watch, the fact must be recorded in the log book.

  6. Chronometer error to be checked against the time signal from BBC and logged in the chronometer every day by the 3rd Officer.

  7. One VHF is to be on Channel 16 all the time at sea. GMDSS watch is to be kept as per rules. All distress messages received are to be logged by the duty officer in the radio log. Weekly and daily tests are to be carried out by the officer in charge of the GMDSS station and logged in the Log book.

  8. All the checklists mentioned in the Navigational Manual are to be followed in the various situations and the appropriate note should be made in the Log book section.

  9. The Officer of the Watch is to be very alert and to keep an eye out for the activities on deck.

  10. If the bilge alarm in the duct keel, pump room or the foc'sle store sound please inform the Master and arrange to investigate the cause.

  11. After your watch on the bridge please take rounds in the accommodation paying close attention to public places hydraulic room, galley and laundry room. Inform the duty officer after taking such rounds.

  12. If a heavy weather course alteration is expected inform all the crew so that precautions can be taken to secure loose material and be prepared for heavy rolling/ shipping seas.

  13. Ensure that only the watch keeping staff arc on the bridge at any time. All other persons who come on the bridge to chat must be discouraged as far as possible.
