8.3 What is the disease or illness being described in each case?

a) Serious bacterial disease spread through food or water, the infected person suffers from diarrhoea, cramp in the intestines and dehydration; the disease is often fatal.

b) A serious, infectious disease of children, its first symptoms are a sore throat, followed by a slight fever, rapid pulse and swelling of the glands in the neck. Docotor: Good afternoon, sit down, please. What’s your name?

P. Brown.

D. Here is your patient’s chart. What’s the trouble?

P. I feel very queer. I had the flu. And then I had a complication on the right ear. I have a shootinh pain in my ear.

D. When did the pain start?

P. A week ago.

D. Have you ever had otitis?

P. Yes, I had a bilateral otitis 3 years ago.

D. Do you have a secretion from your ear?

P. I do. And I don’t hear well enough with my right ear.

D. (Having examined the patient with an ear speculum)

You have a bad inflammation. I’ll prescribe you some antibiotics and UHF on the right ear.

P. And what about my hearing?

D. Let’s check up your hearing. Close the left ear and repeat after me. (counts in whisper): 37,18,25 etc.

P. I don’t hear anything.

D. (speaks louder); Once more, please. 15, 26, 32…

(repeats) 15, 26, 32

You don’t hear a whisper, but you do hear a conversation.It’s natural. You have a bad inflammation. It’s an acute condition of the chronic otitis. I’ll put you on a sick leave. You will be better in a few days.

And here is the prescriptionfor some drops. They will relieve the pain.

P. And how shall I take the medicine?

D. The nurse will tell you everything.

P. Thank you , doctor. Good-bye
