UNIT 3

Text American Meals

Americans do not like to prepare meals at home. They prefer to eat at cafes or restaurants. Usually they have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. American breakfast as a rule consists of butter, jam, bread or a roll. Usually people also eat cereal with milk, some cheese, soft-boiled eggs and drink orange juice, tea or coffee. Most of Americans do not come back home to lunch, they have it at Fast Food Restaurants. The most common menu consists of apple-pie, hamburger, cheeseburger, sandwiches. There are a lot of "fast food" shops to buy something to eat quickly. They are situated on many street corners. These sell hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks like Coca-Cola. For dinner they have meat, fried or baked potatoes with ketchup, corn, peas and macaroni. In general many drinks are drunk with ice, even tea.

Read & translate the text AMERICAN FOOD

What is American food? The answer is that it is partly Italian, partly British, partly German, partly Mexican, partly Chinese... When people from other countries came to live in the USA, they brought different cooking traditions. Some of them opened restaurants. Today Americans enjoy food e from all over the world. Over the years some foreign dishes changed a little. For example, their favourite doughnuts were originally from Holland. In 1847, a young American boy told his mother that her doughnuts were never cooked in the middle. He cut out the centres and his mother cooked the rings — and they were very tasty! Americans eat a lot, and when they go to a restaurant, they do not expect to be hungry afterwards. Most restaurants will put a lot of food on your plate — sometimes it can be too much. But if you can't finish it all, don't worry: they will give you a "doggy bag" and you can take it home.

You can also come across the expression "brunch" which is a combination of breakfast and lunch usually eaten late on a Sunday morning when people can sleep late and yet it is too early to lunch. doughnut - пончик

BREAKFAST

Americans usually have three meals a day, that is to say, breakfast, lunch and supper. Breakfast usually consists of the following: they begin with juice — either fresh orange juice, or tomato juice, apple juice, pine-apple juice or grape-fruit juice. Those who do not like juice might have the same type of fruit in its fresh form.

Next they usually have cereal, cold cereal, such as corn flakes, wheat or oats mixed

with milk and sugar and (when in season) some fresh fruits, such as strawberries,

blueberries or the like.

The most important part of the meal is the eggs. They have eggs in one of many forms. One can have "sunny-side-up" eggs, soft-boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, an omelette with cheese or with ham. Some people prefer to have pancakes with butter or syrup. After this they usually have coffee. Americans prefer not to drink tea for breakfast, but coffee with milk or cream and sugar. Along with the meal they have toasted bread with milk and jam or rolls. For those who have a sweet tooth they have some nice buns covered with sugar and some fruit inside of them. There are some individuals in America who do not believe in a good "hearty" breakfast and take just a cup of black coffee and a piece of toast. For those who do not have the time or who refuse to eat properly they invented "instant breakfast", that is to say — it's a powdered formula that they add to a cold glass of milk. In schools children can have a "snack" - a little carton of milk and a cookie. In factories and offices they have a cup of coffee or a bun.

For sandwiches there are two traditional things: the hot-dog (which is similar to a sausage) served in a roll and covered with mustard and relish. Relish is a type of green chopped-off substances made from pickles, but to it are added different spices. They might also have a hamburger for lunch. It is nothing more than a round piece of chopped meat and with that they usually eat onions and ketchup (a tomato sauce). Hamburgers are served on a roll. Other sandwiches might be a ham sandwich or a cheese sandwich or a ham and cheese sandwich. They also have chicken sandwiches. These are served on square pieces of white bread. They also have wheat bread and rye bread.

For dessert they have their favourite ice cream. To drink they have either coffee, tea or milk. The tea is served either hot or cold. Most younger people and especially in the summertime drink iced tea. Some people do have a glass of soda-water but it's frowned upon by health experts.

SUPPER

Supper is called the principal meal of the day. It is served at about 6 pm. Americans use the term "dinner" if they mean a more formal occasion and it might be later in the evening, at about 7 or 7.30 pm when they have guests. Or on holidays or on Sundays they call it "dinner" when they have their principal meal at about 2 pm in the afternoon.

Supper is a family meal. It is the one time of the day when the family would really be together, because people usually have their breakfast at different time, upon the time they leave for school or work, everyone has lunch in their place of work or study, but supper is for the whole family. Now supper consists of three parts: an appetizer, a main course and a dessert.

For an appetizer they might have some sort of fruit. It might be a half of grapefruit, or a fruit cup (which is a collection of various fruit). Or in the cold weather they serve soup.

The main course usually consists of meat or fish along with vegetables and a salad. The vegetables are usually one form of potatoes: fried, mashed or baked. Salad may be one of many kinds. It usually consists of lettuce and they chop tomatoes to it or cucumbers or both, and cover it with a special sauce or dressing. For dressing they mix mayonnaise and ketchup.

Ice cream plays an important role in dessert, or they eat some fruit. Jelly is a typically American dessert which is easy to make. It is a type of jelly in the form of strawberry or grape and is a favourite with children. It is very light and as they say "There is always room for jelly". Pies and cakes are their favourite, especially apple-pie. The expression is "to be as American as apple-pie".

Restaurants and cafes in the USA and Great Britain

There are many kinds of restaurants in the USA — fast food places like McDonald's and Burger King, cafes, restaurants of many nationalities .In almost any town or city in the USA there is usually a restaurant that will suit your taste and your budget. When dining in most restaurants, a waitress will normally greet you and show you to a table. Often, you are asked whether you prefer the smoking or non-smoking section. Once seated, a waiter or waitress will bring you a menu and tell you about the special dishes which are served in this restaurant. Your waiter or waitress may seem you very friendly. He / she may say you "Hi" and introduce him / her.

Usually you have a starter (soup, some snack, fruit juice), main courses (meat or fish with vegetables) and desserts (cake or pie).

When you get the check, you will need to leave a tip, normally 15 % of the amount for your meal, depending on the quality of the service. In most restaurants you will be able to pay with a credit card.

And at last some interesting facts about the restaurants. The owner of one of the New York restaurants approves that his institution has world's superiority on length of the menu. He has all bases for such statement: length of the menu of his restaurant is equal 115 centimeters, and 177 dishes are listed in it.

One more applicant for world's glory is the restaurant "The Cheerful farmer" in England. It differs by a magnificent choice of sandwiches. In the menu there are 501 kinds of this traditional light snack of the Englishmen.
