Lesson 1

A computer network

  1. Read words with their translations.

network  ['netwɜ:k] - мережа

allow [ə'lau] - дозволяти

to exchange [iks'ʧeindʒ] – обмінюватись, міняти

node [nəud] - вузол

originate [ə'ridʒineit] - створювати

route [ru:t] - відправляти

instant ['instənt] - миттєвий

intent [in'tent] – призначення, мета

set [set] - напрямок, набір

Constrained [kən'streind] - спрямований

wireless ['waɪələs] - бездротовий

twisted-pair - двожильний

copper ['kɔpə] – мідь, мідний

Coaxial [kəʊ'æksiəl] – коаксіальний (який має загальну вісь)

optical fiber ['ɔptik(ə)l 'faibə] - оптичне волокно

  1. Read the text.

A computer network or data network is a telecommunication network that allows computers to exchange data. In computer networks, networked computing devices pass data to each other along data connections. The connections (network links) between nodes are established using either cable media or wireless media. The best-known computer network is the Internet.

Network computer devices that originate, route and terminate the data are called network nodes. Nodes can include hosts such as servers and personal computers, as well as networking hardware. Two devices are said to be networked when a device is able to exchange information with another device.

Computer networks support applications such as access to the World Wide Web, shared use of application and storage servers, printers, and fax machines, and use of email and instant messaging applications. Computer networks differ in the physical media used to transmit their signals, the communications protocols to organize network traffic, the network's size, topology and organizational intent.

A computer network is any set of computers or devices connected to each other with the ability to exchange data.

Examples of networks are:

  • local area network (LAN), which is usually a small network constrained to a small geographic area;

  • wide area network (WAN) that is usually a larger network that covers a large geographic area;

  • wireless LANs and WANs (WLAN & WWAN) is the wireless equivalent of the LAN and WAN.

All networks are interconnected to allow communication with a variety of different kinds of media, including twisted-pair copper wire table, coaxial cable, optical fiber, and various wireless technologies. The devices can be separated by a few meters (e.g. via Bluetooth) or nearly unlimited distances (e.g. via the interconnections of the Internet).

Exercises

  1. Define the term ‘computer network’.

  2. Give examples of networks by their geographic scope.

  3. Give Russian equivalents of the following words and expressions:

Data, devices, connections, best-known, originate, nodes, hardware, to exchange, support, traffic, ability, wide, wireless, twisted-pair.

  1. Find those words in the text and translate sentences containing them.

  2. Translate the words/expressions into English:

Мережа, обмінюватись, відправляти, миттєвий, пристрій, апаратне забезпечення, підтримувати, призначення, доступ, один з одним, здатність, місцевий/локальний, бездротовий, двожильний, коаксіальний, поділятись.

  1. Interpret the following abbreviations:

LAN, WAN, WLAN, WWAN.

  1. Fill the missing words into gaps.

  1. A computer network or data network is a ________________ network that allows computers to exchange data.

  2. _______can include hosts such as servers and personal computers, as well as networking hardware.

  3. A computer network is any set of computers or devices _________to each other with the ability to exchange data.

  4. The devices can be separated by a few meters (e.g. via Bluetooth) or nearly _________distances (e.g. via the interconnections of the Internet).

  5. The connections (network links) between nodes are established using either cable media or ______ media.

wireless, nodes, unlimited, telecommunication, connected.
