Развитие речи у детей идет по двум направлениям: пассивное усвоение слов речи, когда ребенок понимает речь, обращенную к нему, но не может говорить, и активное использование речи. Пассивная речь развивается быстрее активной. В возрасте примерно шести-восьми месяцев начинается развитие пассивной речи, когда ребенок учится различать и понимать первые простые слова и команды. В этот период особое значение имеет речевое окружение ребенка. Чем больше взрослые будут говорить с ребенком, тем быстрее и лучше будет развиваться его речь. Если мало разговаривать с ребенком, то его речь будет развиваться с задержкой. Также очень важно чтобы ребенок слышал правильную и четкую речь без дефектов.
К большому удовольствию многих родителей некоторые дети примерно в возрасте уже восьми - десяти месяцев начинают пока нечетко повторять некоторые слова за взрослыми, удивляя всех «необыкновенными способностями».
