Примерно в возрасте трех месяцев ребенок начинает реагировать на обращение к нему улыбкой, движениями рук и ног, произносит некоторые звуки, количество которых постепенно увеличивается. К трем месяцам ребенок может говорить короткие слоги ("aн", "aт"), у некоторых детей появляются сложные слоги (агу, тил, тиль). Кроме того, некоторые дети с большим удовольствием используют «мелодию», состоящую только из двух звуков, похожую на трель. Характер, эмоциональная окраска всех употребляемых звуков также изменяется – место коротких, резких звуков занимают мелодичные и певучие.

На четвертом месяце жизни самым значительным достижением можно считать развитие навыков общения и диалога. Кроме того, в это время также наблюдаются значительные изменения в двигательной сфере: ребенок начинает слушать голос взрослого, который с ним говорит, искать его глазами и, встретившись с ним взглядом, отвечать громким смехом или произнесением коротких звуков.

К 4-6 месяцам ребенок полностью осваивает национальные специфические черты употребления гласных звуков родного языка, освоив которые, переходит к изучению их артикуляционных особенностей.
