Gorno-Altaisk State University is the largest educational centre of the Altai Republic. It is located in an ecologically clean and picturesque region. The University consists of 4 academic buildings, 3 dormitories, 3 libraries and other buildings and structures compactly located in the center of Gorno-Altaisk, which is very convenient for living and learning. Gorno-Altaisk State University was founded in 1949 as the Teacher Training Institute. In the beginning there were only three departments at the institute (the Department of Language and Literature, the Physics and Mathematics Department, and the Department of Natural Geography). In 1993 it was given the status of a classical University. By that time, six departments functioned at the university (geographical, biochemical, physical and mathematical, philological, historical, and the department of foreign languages),

Some Faculties experienced transformation in recent years. For example, in 2013 the Faculty of Foreign Languages was joined to the Philological Faculty. A year later, in 2014, two Faculties, Philological and Historical were merged under the name of the Department of History and Philology.

Our university is large. At present more than 5 000 students and 80 postgraduates are enrolled at the University and 500 instructors work here, more than a half of them with scientific degrees. Professors, Associate Professors and lecturers deliver lectures on various subjects. There are seven faculties at the University: Faculty of Natural Sciences and Geography, Faculty of History and Philology, Faculty of Economics and Law, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Faculty of Altai Studies and Turkic Languages, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Faculty of Agrotechnologies and Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural College.

The University is housed in 4 blocks, situated in different parts of Gorno-Altaisk.

The University has a splendid scientific library for reference and research. Students can borrow books as well as work in cosy reading halls.

Graduates can get degrees in 27 specialties in some fields of sciences such as mathematics, history, pedagogic, psychology, geography etc. Active research is being carried out at the University to find out and introduce new efficient teaching methods. psychologists, and teachers.

GASU has more than 30 tracks for a bachelor degree and specialty and 6 master's programs. Annually the university admits about 600 first-year students. The university prepares mathematicians, physicists, biologists, chemists, geographers, historians, philologists (in the spheres of Russian and Literature, the Altai language and Literature, English and German languages), economists, lawyers, managers, accountants, veterinarians, psychologists, and teachers. There are additional educational programs: phytodesign, criminal chemistry and law, recreation and spoils tourism, computer science and computation, and interpretation in the sphere of professional communications.

International relations of the University are expanding and play a big role in the University. In the academic and scientific fields the university is connected with the organizations in more than 10 countries, including the universities of the USA, China, Germany, Canada, Great Britain, Finance, Belgium and others. In GASU international conferences on Turkic languages and literature are held. The most promising research spheres are the following: ecology, traditional land use, landscape planning, archaeology, Turkic Studies and others.

There are many different kinds of laboratories and lecture halls in our university. Each building has its own library and reading hall. We never miss lectures and tutorials and take notes of them. There are two terms in a year. In January and June we take examinations. We must work hard to pass our exams successfully. We are internal students and we do not fail in an exam. There is also an extramural department at our university. External students come to the university twice a year in order to listen to lecturers and pass their tests and exams. After summer examination session we have our summer holidays.

At the university there are public organizations, youth and sports clubs, a museum of GASU history, archeological, zoological, and geological museums, a museum of regional studies. There is also a big swimming pool on campus.

Our students have an opportunity to explore and discover their skills and develop then research passions. They are also involved in sport and extracurricular activities.
