Student A: You are one of the patients who called Body Talk in Listening Two. Tell Dr. Ideal about your problem. When the doctor asks you questions, use your imagination and add details about your complaint.

Patients

Shelley Travers, a secretary who suffers from back pain

Linda Jenkins, a person who has a large wart on her foot

Ray Ishwood, an elderly person with arthritis

Student B: You are Dr. Ideal. Take time to listen to your patient. Ask lots of questions so that you can make an accurate diagnosis.

1. Should doctors give patients all the information about their conditions, even when news is bad?

2. Traditionally, U.S. insurance companies have not paid for alternative treatments such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, and chiropractic. Do you think they should?

Writing tips

E-mails

• E-mails tend to be less formal than other written business documents but more formal than conversational language. The degree of formality will depend on who the receiver is, and whether or not you have met the receiver. As a rule, formal terms such as Yours faithfully/Yours sincerely are replaced by Regards/With best wishes.

• Effective business e-mails should be brief, clear and action-driven.

• When replying to an e-mail, do not include the original e-mail if it is not necessary.

• Long documents (eg reports) are best sent as an attachment to a short covering note.

• Use the bcc (blind copy) feature when the e-mail is being sent to more than one person or company and you wish to keep that a secret.

• Make sure that the subject line is clear. With people receiving 70-100 e-mails a day, the most interesting-looking e-mails will be opened first.

• Screen sizes vary, so use a maximum of 72 characters per line.

• Do not overuse capital letters: they SHOUT.

• Always check spelling and grammar.
