IV. Read the text. What means of teaching are used?

Simulations are complementary material that permits the creation of artificial situations that resemble real-life situations. Computer programmes simulators, models and dummies plastic heads, dummies including a computers that gives the student information on how he or she is doing.

Simulated patients – are specially trained people who learn to simulate symptoms.

Students and teaches themselves can act as a patients for the simple examinations.

Evaluation (for a student) it measures the extent of his or her learning.

When most of them fail, the reason could be that the course is badly structured.

Essay. Modified essay – answer a series of linked Q in order to solve a problem.

Teaching staff are rarely selected on the basis of their teaching capabilities. For example, health sciences teachers in Spain are selected according to their investigated and clinical capabilities, on the assumption that a good scientist or professional is automatically a good teacher.

Complementary material is used to facilitate teaching and learning, printed material includes: books, magazines, information sheets, posters; Projected material includes: slides, videos, programmes, films;

Students can watch videos of expert lectures without the need for the presence of the lecturer. As a teaching method, however, this has been a failure because the students get bored and lose interest quickly.

The use of pictures in education. A picture is worth a thousand words (saying).

The use of pictures can have several aims. The first is the ability to remember. Visual memory is a lot stronger then auditory memory. The second aim is attracting attention. The third aim is developing an affective role. The fourth, pictures can help in supporting education by easing the understanding of a specific subject. (Xerox)

Types of examination

Written examinations are those in which student must present their answer in writing. It is used to assess the knowledge field from the recall of information to problem – solving abilities.

Oral examinations require students to answer orally. Observation examination require student to perform a certain task or demonstrate some skills. They are used mainly to evaluate attitudes or competence.

The computerized examinations – a computer is used. Among the most frequently used types of examinations are: essays, short-answer questions, problem-solving (cases, modified essays, programmed examinations); tests (multiple choice, true or false, pairing); practical examinations: real, simulated.
