II. Read and translate the text. Medical student education in the United States of America

The typical medical student has completed four years of college or university education with either a BA or a BS degree (usually with a major in the biological (45%) or physical (21%) sciences, after eight years of secondary high school education).

Approximately 55% of applicants are enrolled; about 16,000 usually 21-23 years of age, 38% women and 10% minority grownups in 127 two to four year medical schools which grant MD degrees. The majority (74) are public, state-supported schools; 53 are private schools. Average tuition costs range, per year, from $ 6,272 for a public school to $ 18,786 for a private school. Most medical students are supported by loan programs but have an average of $ 45,000 indebtedness after completion of their education. Most medical students (90%) complete their education and pass the NBME part I/II examinations after two and four years respectively.

All medical school graduates (MD) take graduate medical education programs (PGY – 1,2,3, etc.); the first years as an intern (completing NEME part III) and then 2-7 years of residency training in 24 recognized specialities (completing written and oral board examinations for speciality practica). Salaries ranging from $ 25,000 to $ 50,000/year are furnished depending on years of training and geographical location (variable cost of living).

Medical practice as a physician is regulated by individual states with state examinations. Continuing medical education (postgraduate) is required for state medical licensure and many programs are available, sponsored by medical schools, hospitals, and private/public organizations.

IV. Remember: It is important to record vocabulary in an interesting and memorable way and device ways of recalling it.

What do you do with vocabulary that you have just learned? What do you do later (the next day, the next week) to recall it? Many students simply record new vocabulary by writing it down, perhaps in alphabetical order, with a translation into their own language. Here are two ideas for recording vocabulary:

1. Synonyms and Antonyms Here are some examples:

huge = gigantic

hardly = barely

smooth ≠ rough

good at ≠ hopeless at

2. Add a group of synonyms or antonyms to the list given above.

3. Pay attention to the group of words:

I. аverage - среднее число

on the average - в среднем

to strike on average - выводить среднее число

above the average - выше

average output - средняя добыча

average height - средний рост

meantime

тем временем

by means of meaning-full

by all means значительный

by no means mean - средний

II. mean - средняя величина
