Exercise 56. Explain the use of the Past Continuous and the Past Simple in the following sentences:
Little Jerry was enjoying Mary’s Bday (birthday) party and didn’t want to go home.
It was getting dark at 6 a.m.
It was raining heavily as the sun was disappearing.
I looked at my husband. Then I took my suitcase and went out.
Lunch was over. Theo was smoking a cigarette. Barbara was sitting on the window seat with a book in her hands.
In my childhood I often stayed with my aunt when my parents had a business trip abroad.
My father was no longer working as I entered the room.
We went shopping two days ago.
John noticed that he was standing upon a letter which lay on the mat.
I was driving along a country road when I spotted a telephone box.
Exercise 57. Imagine that you were present when these things happened, then, in pairs, ask and answer questions, as in the example.
SA: What were you doing when the burglar broke in?
SB: I was watching TV.
SA- What did you do?
SB: I called for help.
The burglar broke in.
The storm broke.
The lights went out.
