Retell the text Our University
Every year many young men and women enter Universities and Institutes of Higher Education in Belarus. The Gomel State University may be the aim of many applicants although there are many more institutions all over Belarus where students get their higher education in various subjects.
I am a student of the Gomel State University named after Francisc Scorina. It was founded in 1969 on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute. The University occupies five buildings and it is one of the largest educational establishments in Belarus. More than 5000 students study at the University. It trains specialists for the system of education and production, future teachers of different subjects, engineers and research workers.
19 Doctors of Science and Professors and about 300 Candidates of Science work at 46 chairs of the University. Our University has many departments: Mathematics, Physics, Biology, History, Philology, Foreign Languages, Law, Economics, History, Geology, Physical Culture, and so on. I am in the department of History.
4 forms of training are offered at the Gomel State University: daytime training, correspondence courses (or extramural department), preparatory courses and postgraduate courses.
The applicants go in for entrance exams in July and August before the new academic year begins. An examination in the Byelorussian or Russian language is compulsory as well as oral exams in the main subjects the students will take.
If the applicants want to have a good command of the subjects in which they will take exams, they attend preliminary courses. Another aim of the preparatory section is to help those who finished school many years ago to become students.
The course of studies lasts for 5 years at the day-time department and 6 years at the correspondence department. The University has good conditions for study. It has a rich library anc^some reading-halls. Different t laboratories with up to date equipment are at the disposal of the students. The academic year begins in September and ends in July. There are 2 terms a year. During the term the students attend lectures, seminars and practical classes. At the end of each term they take preliminaries and exams. Most students receive grants. The amount depends on the results of the previous set of exams. The first two years of study are generally the most difficult. A new student may have up to 40 hours a week of seminars, lectures and classcss’In the first years students study general and special subjects, such as native and foreign languages, history of the country, philosophy, physiology, etc. In the senior courses the students study many special subjects.
The students of extramural department combine work and studying at the Gomel State University.
Many students carry out research work. They are members of students’ scientific societies. After graduation the most capable students can enter the post-graduate courses where they continue their research work. Our students do not only study but they also take an active part in public life. They attend trade union meetings; organize discussion of new films and books. Many of them are active members of sport clubs, music and theatre societies. In summer some students work in construction teams. Students of our University have all facilities for studies and rest.
