Exercise 7. Using the sentence structures of Ex.5. and the information given in the Student’s Individual Task: Unit 2., Part 1., Ex.1. describe a Weather Forecast.

    Part 2. Precipitation

Study the list of vocabulary and pronounce the words after the teacher:

    Vocabulary:

    precipitation [pri‚sipi’teiò(ə)n] – осадки

to occur [tə ә’kə:] – происходить, случаться

to determine [tə di’tə:min] – определять, supersaturated [‚s(j)u:pə’sæt∫ureitid] – перенасыщенный

freezing point of water [’fri:ziŋ pɔint əv ’wɔ:tə] – точка замерзания воды, температура замерзания

gravity [’græviti] – сила тяжести, тяготение

to pull [tə pul] – тянуть, притягивать

although [ɔ:l’ðəu] – хотя; не смотря на то, что

    droplet [’drɔplit] – капелька

ice crystal [ais kristl] – ледяной кристалл

    constantly [’kɔnstəntli] – постоянно

    average [’æv(ə)ridჳ] – средний

    diameter [dai’æmitə] – диаметр

    mile [mail] – миля

still air [stil eə] – недвижимый воздух

moving air [’mu:viŋ eə] – движимый воздух

to fall (fell, fallen) [tə fɔ:l] – выпадать

    effect [i’fekt] – воздействие, результат

    inch=2,54cm – дюйм

coalescence [‚kəuə’les(ə)ns] – соединение, сращение, физ. коалесценция

Exercise 1. Match the words on the left with their definitions on the right:

    1. mile a. water falling in drops from the clouds

    2. air b. a very small quantity of liquid

    3. sky c. a mixture of gases forming the earth’s atmosphere

    4. diameter d. force that attracts objects towards the center of the earth

    5. rain e. a unit of length equals to 1.609 km.

    6. cloud f. a straight line through the center of a circle

    7. droplet g. a mass of condensed water vapor floating in the sky

    8. gravity h. upper atmosphere as seen from the earth

Exercise 2. Discuss vocabulary of the previous exercise using the following models:

    Model 1:

    1. – Nick, tell me please what does the word air mean?

    2. – Let me see. It means a mixture of gases forming the earth’s atmosphere.

    1. – It’s quite clear thank you.

    B. – You are welcome. Ask any time you need.

    Model 2:

    1. – Nick, tell me please what does the word cloud mean?

    2. – Sorry will you repeat it again? Which word?

    1. Cloud.

    B. – Ah, cloud. It means a mass of condensed water vapor floating in the sky.

    A. – I’m very much obliged to you, Nick.

    B. – No, problem. I am very glad to help you.

Exercise 3. Read the text “Precipitation” and answer the questions given below:

    T he process of coalescence

    Precipitation

Precipitation is rain, snow, sleet and hail. Precipitation can occur when there are clouds in the sky. But not all kinds of clouds can produce precipitation. Temperature helps to determine what form precipitation will take. For example, snow forms when air is supersaturated and the temperature is below the freezing point of water.

Rain falls from clouds for the same reason anything falls to earth. The earth’s gravity pulls it. Although every cloud is made of water droplets or ice crystals rain or snow doesn’t fall constantly. The droplets or ice crystals are very small, so the effect of gravity doesn’t work. The average size of cloud droplet is only 1/2500 inch in diameter. It is so small that it takes 16 hours to fall half a mile in the still air. It doesn’t fall at all in the moving air. Only when the droplet grows to a diameter of 1/125 inch or larger it can fall from the cloud.

    Questions:

    1. When does precipitation occur?

    2. Do all kinds of clouds produce precipitation?

    3. What helps to determine a form of precipitation?

    4. Why does rain fall from clouds to earth?

    5. Does rain fall constantly?

    6. When does the effect of gravity start working?

    7. Precipitation occurs in the cloudy sky, doesn’t it?

    8. The temperature determines the average level of precipitation, doesn’t it?

    9. The snow doesn’t fall when the temperature is above zero, does it?

    10. The droplets or ice crystals are very small, aren’t they?

Exercise 4. Listen to the text “How do the rainforests make rain?” twice and draw each sentence in pictures like it is shown in the model:

    Model:

    1. Rain falls from the clouds.

Exercise 5. Listen to the text “How do the rainforests make rain?” once again and describe your pictures orally.
