Would rather, would sooner

1. Модальные обороты would rather, would sooner выражают желание, склонность говорящего выполнить действие (preference). В разговорной речи употребляются сокращенные формы d’rather и d’sooner. Модальный оборот может сопровождаться наречием than.
I would rather stay at home. I’d rather have coffee than tea.	Я бы лучше остался дома. Я бы предпочла кофе чаю.
В отрицательных предложениях отрицание not следует за оборотом would rather /would sooner.
I’d rather not come with you.	Я бы не хотел идти с тобой.
2. Модальные обороты would rather и would sooner употребляются с разными формами инфинитива. 2.1. Сочетание модального оборота с неперфектным инфинитивом (Indefinite Infinitive) относит действие к настоящему или будущему.
I’d rather leave on an earlier train.	Я бы предпочел уехать ранним поездом.
2.2. Модальный оборот с перфектным инфинитивом (Perfect Infinitive) выражает нереализованное желание говорящего совершить действие в прошлом.
We would sooner have stayed at home that night, but …	Мы бы предпочли в тот вечер остаться дома, но …
3. Модальные обороты would rather и would sooner также выражают желание говорящего о выполнении действия кем-то. После оборота d’rather употребляется глагол в форме Past Indefinite, если желаемое действие относится в настоящему или будущему.
I’d rather Jack left on an earlier train.	Я бы предпочел, чтобы Джек уехал ранним поездом.
После оборота I’d rather употребляется глагол в форме Past Perfect, если желаемое действие относится к прошлому.
I’d rather you had been present.	Я бы предпочел, чтобы вы присутствовали тогда.
