Physical disabilities are most commonly classified according to their etiologies (causes). The three major causal classifications are neurologic conditions, which are disabilities caused by damage to or incomplete development of the brain or spinal cord; orthopedic conditions, which are caused by damage to, disease of, or lack of development of bones, muscles, or joints of the body; and health conditions, which are caused by acute or chronic disease.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a neurologic condition characterized by abnormal movement or motor dysfunction caused by damage to the brain. The alteration or interruption of motor function is its distinguishing characteristic. Cerebral palsy can occur during gestation (prenatally); during the birth process (perinatally); or in the wake of an accident, a disease, or an injury (postnatally).

The extent of cerebral palsy can range from mild to severe disability. Individuals with mild involvement are usually ambulatory, have good verbal skills, and generally are average or above average in intelligence. Fine motor coordination is usually impaired. Individuals with moderate involvement may or may not need assistance in walking. Their ability to speak intelligibly and use both fine and gross motor coordination may be affected. Individuals with severe involvement are usually wheelchair users. Often they lack verbal, communication skills and need the assistance of augmentative communication devices. Fine and gross motor skills are severely impaired.

In addition to degree of severity, cerebral palsy may be classified according to physiological type (spasticity, ametosis, ataxia, rigidity, tremor, hypotonia, or mixed) and topography (limbs involvement).

Associated disorders of cerebral palsy include sensory impairments, convulsive disorders, mental retardation, communication disorders, and learning disabilities. An individual may have any one or several of these associated disorders».

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a disorder of the central nervous system characterized by recurring explosive discharges of electrical activity that cause episodic periods of unconsciousness or psychic dysfunction. These episodic periods are referred to as seizures. Because some individuals with physical disabilities have experienced brain damage, epilepsy is a common associated disorder. The most frequent types of seizures that individuals with epilepsy experience are grand mal, petit mal, psychomotor, and Jacksonian. On occasion, some individuals may exhibit more than one type of seizure.
