MY WORKING DAY

I get up at 7 o'clock in the morning. I do my morning exercises, wash and dress. It takes me 30 minutes to do all that. Then I have breakfast. It doesn't take me long to prepare breakfast, because I have tea or coffee, some toast with butter and eggs. Sometimes I eat porridge.

At 8 o'clock I leave home and go to the Institute. As a rule I come to the Institute at a quarter to 9. The lessons begin at 9 sharp. Today we have two lectures, a seminar and an English lesson. At 12 o'clock we have a short break for lunch.

At our English lessons we read texts, ask questions and answer them and do exercises. We speak English at the lessons. We speak English a little now, but we want to speak English well.

Classes are over at two o'clock. After classes I usually stay at the Institute because I need a book or an article which I can only get in the reading-room. I also like to work at my report or do my lessons in the reading-room.

I come home at about 6 o'clock. When I have enough spare time I do some work about the house and go shopping to help my mother. Sometimes I go to see my friends or they come to see me. We watch films, chat, listen to music, discuss politics, literature and arts. I like to stay home to relax. At 11 o'clock I go to bed.

On Sundays I get up later than usual. Sunday is my day off. I spend it in different ways. I visit an art exhibition, a museum or a sports event. Sometimes I go to the country where I walk in the forest or go skiing.

On Sunday evening I visit a theatre or go to see my friends.

Exercise 2. Read the dialogues.

1. —Hello, Pete!

  • Hello, John!

  • I hope I didn't wake you up.

  • Yes, you did, but it's all right.

2. —How are you, Paul? I'm very glad to see you again.

  • I'm well, thank you.

  • I hope you had a good time yesterday.

  • Oh, yes, I had a very nice day, thank you. And what about you?

  • I didn't. I stayed at home and worked hard;

  • It's a pity.

3. —Hello, Pat. You didn't phone rune yesterday.

  • No, I didn't. I was very tired last night.

  • Why?

  • I had such a busy day.

  • Did you? What did you do?

  • I woke up at 6 and went to the station to meet my mother-in-law.

  • Why didn't your husband do that?

  • He went to Paris on business.

  • I see.

  • Then we had breakfast. I left her at home and went to my office. I was 15 minutes late because I was in a hurry and a policeman stopped me. So it took me an hour to get to my work.

  • Oh, my! I hope you didn't have much work at the office.

  • Yes, I did. We had a long meeting in the morning, then I had a lot of visitors, and at the end of the working day I wrote some business letters.

  • Did your daughter cook dinner for you?

  • No, she didn't. She was busy at the University and came home very late.

  • Poor thing! I hope you are not so busy tomorrow.
