The adjective
В современном английском языке прилагательные изменяются только по степеням сравнения. Существуют три степени сравнения - положительная, сравнительная и превосходная. В зависимости от образования степеней сравнения прилагательные подразделяются на три группы:
односложные - long, short, big и т.д., а также некоторые двусложные, оканчивающиеся на - у: early, easy;
многосложные - interesting, difficult и др.;
прилагательные (и наречия), образующие степени сравнения не по общим правилам - good, bad, little, far, many, much.
Прилагательные первой группы образуют сравнительную степень путем прибавления суффикса -er, а превосходную - путем прибавления суффикса -est:

В односложных прилагательных с краткой гласной конечная согласная удваивается:
big bigger the biggest
thin thinner the thinnest
К многосложным прилагательным прибавляется слово more/less в сравнительной степени и the most/least - в превосходной:

Не по общим правилам образуют степени сравнения следующие прилагательные (и наречия):

Прилагательные в превосходной степени имеют определенный артикль 'the', наречия артикля не имеют.
В предложении прилагательные чаще всего выступают в роли определений и определяют только существительные.
