Употребление:

Обозначает действие, происходящее в момент речи:

– What are you doing? – I’m doing my homework.

– Что вы делаете? – Я делаю домашнее задание.

Обозначает действие, длящееся некоторое время, не обязательно в момент речи:

I’m knitting a sweater. Я вяжу свитер (но в данный момент я этого не делаю).

Обозначает действие, которое представляется говорящему повторяющимся и вызывает его неудовольствие, раздражение:

She’s always complaining. Она постоянно жалуется.

Выражает запланированное в ближайшем будущем действие (преимущественно с глаголами движения, а также с глаголами do, have, see в значении «встречать») всегда с обстоятельством времени):

– What are you doing tonight? – Что вы делаете сегодня вечером?

(What are your plans for tonight?) (Какие у вас планы?)

He’s flying to London the day after tomorrow. Послезавтра он летит в Лондон.

I’m seeing my friend tomorrow. Завтра я встречаюсь с друзьями.

Конструкция to be going to (+ do) – собираться сделать что-то, обозначает намерение совершить действие в будущем.

I am going to write a composition. Я собираюсь написать сочинение.

Некоторые глаголы не имеют форм Continuous:

  • глаголы, выражающие эмоции и чувства: adore – обожать, admire – восхищаться, care for – любить, desireжелать, dislike – не любить, fear – бояться, hate – ненавидеть, like – нравиться, love – любить, mind – возражать, иметь что-либо против, need – нуждаться в чем-либо, prefer – предпочитать, surprise – удивлять, want – хотеть, wish – желать, и др.

Do you mind my smoking? – Вы не будете возражать, если я закурю?

– I don’t mind it a bit. – Нет, нисколько.

  • глаголы мышления и умственной деятельности: agree – соглашаться, believe – верить, полагать, doubt – сомневаться, forget – забывать, forgive – прощать, imagine – воображать, know – знать, mean – иметь в виду, notice – замечать, realize – осознавать, recall – вспоминать, recognize – узнавать, refuse – отказывать, remember – помнить, suppose – полагать, think (=have an opinion) думать, иметь мнение, understand – понимать и др.

Do you believe him? – Вы верите ему?

  • глаголы «быть, существовать»: be – быть, consist of – состоять из, exist – существовать.

  • глаголы описания внешности: appear – казаться, look – выглядеть, look like – быть похожим на кого-либо, resemble – напоминать кого-либо внешне, seem – казаться, и др.

She looks well/ill. Она выглядит хорошо/плохо.

This month the baby looks like his father.

В этом месяце ребенок похож на отца.

  • глаголы обладания: belong – принадлежать, contain – содержать (в себе), include – включать (в себя), own – владеть, иметь, обладать, possess – владеть и др.

– Who owns this house? – Кто владеет этим домом?

  • глаголы, выражающие ощущения: feel – чувствовать, hear – слышать, see – видеть, smell – пахнуть, notice – замечать и др.

Do you hear anything? – Ты что-нибудь слышишь?

The soup tastes good. Суп вкусный.

Некоторые глаголы можно употреблять в Continuous в особенных значениях:
