10. Each company possesses its own regulations. Match the jobs with the company regulations.

    1. construction worker d) lowyer

    2. bank employee e) cook

    3. hospital doctor f) airline pilot

1 You have to keep your beeper switched on at all times.

2 You have to wash your hands before handling food.

3 You can’t discuss your clients’ affairs with anyone else.

4 You have to wear a hard hat at all times.

5 You can’t drink alcohol for 48 hours before you go on duty.

6 Before you cash large checks, you have to check the customer’s account.

11. a) You and your partner are the owners of a large company. Decide what kind of company it is (bank, car manufacturer, hotel chain, fast food chain, etc.). Then make a list of company regulations like those in the previous exercise. Think about some of the following:

  • working hours - overseas assignments

  • overtime - entertaining clients

  • business trips - smoking

  • eating and drinking - vacations

  • clothing/uniform - foreign languages

  • extra duties

b) Work with another pair. Read them your company regulations, but don’t tell them what kind of company you are. Let them guess it.

c) Make a list of your own company regulations. Which regulations would you like to change and why? Are there any other regulations you would like to add?

12. a) Craig Nash is a software engineer with an American computer company. He is going to fly to South Korea on business next week. It will be his first long flight, and his colleague Melissa is giving him some advice.

What advice does Melissa give? Listen and check the correct answers

Do Don’t

    1. Eat rich, fatty foods before the flight.

    2. Drink alcohol before the flight.

    3. Wear loose-fitting clothes.

    4. Drink water during the flight.

    5. Eat too much during the flight.

    6. Exercise during the flight.

    7. Adjust to the new time zone as soon as possible.

    8. Have a business meeting soon after you arrive.

b)Work with a partner. Take turns giving advice about flying. Use the ideas in the previous exercise about flying and these expressions:

It’s a good idea (not) to… e.g. A: Do you have any tips for my flight?

It’s better if you (don’t)… B: Well, it’s a good idea to…

You should / shouldn’t… A: Thanks.

I (don’t) think you should …

A: Are you looking forward to the trip, Craig?

B: Yes and no. It’ll be my first long flight and, to be honest, I don’t really like my flying. You travel a lot, Melissa. Do you have any tips for the flight?

A: well, there are some things you can do before you fly. For example, it’s better if you don’t eat rich, fatty foods the day before you leave, and it’s a good idea not to drink alcohol the day before, too.

B: OK. What about clothes?

A: You should wear loose-fitting clothes. Natural fibers like cotton are best. Then your skin can breathe more easily.

B: Really? I didn’t know that. And I guess I shouldn’t drink alcohol during the flight?

A: It’s better if you don’t. Water is best. Try to drink as much water as you can. And don’t eat too much. Oh, and you should get up and move around during the flight. Walk around a little, do some stretching exercises.

B: Right! A lot of people complain about jet-lag. Any advice on that?

A: I think you should try to adjust to the new time zone as quickly as possible. Not everyone agrees, but it works for me.

B: I guess, I’ll be pretty tired when I arrive.

A: Probably, so it’s not a good idea to go straight to a business meeting. Give yourself time to go to your hotel, take a shower, and relax a little first, if you can.

B: That’s a good idea. And what about…
